I spent most of Friday afternoon on something that technically isn't work.

Responding to messages. Someone asking about the Sunday session. Someone who came once six months ago and wanted to know if they could come back. A message from someone who's been on my email list for two years and finally wrote back.

I don't count this as marketing. I count it as the job.

The business exists to put people into practice. The conversations are the practice. So the afternoon wasn't time away from the work — it was the work, just without a tidy product name attached.

Quick question for this week:

When you meditate, what do you actually do with your hands?

I ask because it seems like a small thing but it's something a lot of people quietly wonder about and nobody really says. There's no wrong answer — some teachers have strong opinions, I just want to know what you actually do.

Six months ago I started working with someone who wanted to start a meditation group in her suburb — a small coastal town, nothing fancy.

She'd never taught before. Came through the Leaders Program wondering if she'd actually be able to do it.

She now runs a fortnightly group. Twelve people, mostly locals, some regulars, some who just show up when they can. She told me last month it's become the thing she looks forward to most in her week.

The Leaders Program is for people who want to do something like that. Not build a business — just put a regular, well-taught meditation group somewhere it doesn't exist yet.

Meditation will make you calm. That's the promise, more or less.

And it does — eventually, sometimes, in certain ways. But the first thing it often does is make you more aware of how unsettled you already are. That can feel like it's making things worse.

It isn't. You're just noticing something that was already there.

I hear this from students fairly regularly: "I think meditation is making me more anxious." Usually what's happened is they've started paying attention, and the attention has landed on something they'd been successfully avoiding.

The practice doesn't create disturbance. It creates less distance from what's already there.

This usually passes. Sometimes it needs support — if someone is dealing with significant trauma, jumping straight into concentration practice might not be the right first step. But for most people, the period of noticing how much is going on is just part of the early stage.

It means it's working.

People ask if I miss my old career.

Honestly: no. Not the job. Sometimes the certainty — the sense that you're doing something with obvious metrics, obvious value.

Teaching is different. The feedback loop is long and often invisible.

You do your best and hope it lands somewhere. The best result is a student I have know for years reflecting back about long lasting change.
