💚 WHAT HELPS YOU LOOK AFTER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH?

We all have different ways of getting through tough days and making space for moments that feel good.

Maybe it’s…
🌿 Getting outside for some fresh air
🎵 Listening to your favourite music
🐾 Spending time with a pet
☕ Having a cuppa with someone you trust
🎨 Doing something creative
🛋️ Taking a break or reaching out for support

It doesn’t have to be big, cost money or look like anyone else’s version of self-care. Sometimes, getting through the day is enough.

💬 If you feel comfortable, share one thing that helps you in the comments. Your idea might give someone else something to try.

There’s no right answer, and you’re welcome to simply read along. Please keep comments kind and share only what you’re comfortable making public.

💛🌼 R U OK? Day at Mentis Assist 🌼💛

Today our team came together to celebrate R U OK? Day, bringing a splash of yellow across the office and a reminder of the importance of connection, kindness and checking in with one another.

From yellow-themed treats and delicious snacks to a coffee van that encouraged staff to pause, connect and share a conversation, the day was filled with opportunities to strengthen our workplace community. Bella our Assistance Dog was on hand to check in on everyone and gave us another reason (other than coffee and mateship) to smile. Even the sunshine joined the celebration, making for bright, sunshine-filled moods all around.

R U OK? Day reminds us that a simple conversation can make a meaningful difference. Taking the time to ask, listen and support one another helps create a workplace where everyone feels valued and connected.

💛 A big thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the day so special. Remember, any day is a good day to ask:"Are you OK?" 💛

SOMEONE ON YOUR MIND? MAKE TIME TO CHECK IN.
R U OK Day is Thursday 10 September—but you don’t need to wait for a special day to ask someone how they’re really going
At Mentis Assist, we encourage you to turn caring thoughts into a conversation. Call a friend. Invite a colleague for a cuppa. Make time for someone you haven’t heard from lately.

You don’t need perfect words or all the answers. Start with genuine care, then follow these four steps:

ASK R U OK?
Choose a comfortable, private moment: “You’ve been on my mind. How are you going?”

LISTEN
Give them time to speak, without judgement or rushing to fix things.

ENCOURAGE ACTION
Ask what support would help. Where needed, encourage them to connect with a GP or mental health professional.

CHECK IN
Keep in touch after the conversation. Caring doesn’t end when the cuppa does.

If they’re not ready to talk, respect that. Let them know you’re available.

Your action today: reach out to one person privately and make time to listen.

And if you’re not OK yourself, you deserve support too. You don’t have to carry everything alone.

🌸 FOOD & MOOD: A LITTLE TASTE OF SPRING 🍓

Spring has arrived in Melbourne! As the days get brighter, it’s a lovely time to enjoy fresh flavours and the pleasure of eating something you like.

Looking for a little inspiration?

🍓 Add some fruit to your breakfast or enjoy it on its own.
🥣 Try yoghurt with fruit, nuts or seeds for an easy snack.
🥕 Enjoy vegetables in a sandwich, a warm meal or with your favourite dip.
🌿 Take your lunch outside or share a snack and a chat with someone.

Fresh, frozen and tinned foods all have a place. Choose what suits your tastes, budget and needs—simple and convenient counts.

We know food can sometimes feel complicated, and shopping or preparing meals can be hard when you’re not feeling your best. There’s no need for a perfect plate. You deserve nourishment, enjoyment and kindness, whatever your body size or relationship with food. 💚

Food is one part of caring for your wellbeing, alongside connection, rest and the support that’s right for you.

🌼 This spring, what’s one food or flavour you’re looking forward to enjoying?

Recovery from mental health doesn't happen in isolation. Connection with others is key.

Research has consistently shown that having a strong connection with community, and supportive relationships can improve wellbeing and build confidence.

At Mentis Assist we believe recovery happens in communities, not just clinics. Whether it's joining one of our groups, meeting with one of our workers, learning a new skill, or reconnecting with old hobbies, every connection can make a difference.

The next conversation you have, the next connection you make, could be the beginning of something life-changing.

LONELINESS AWARENESS WEEK AUSTRALIA
3–9 August 2026

Every connection starts with someone reaching out.
Feeling connected isn't just about being around other people, it's about creating places where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and included.

A simple conversation, an invitation for a coffee, saving someone a seat, smiling at a neighbour, or welcoming a new face into a group can make a lasting difference. Small acts of kindness and inclusion help build stronger communities where people feel they belong.

This Loneliness Awareness Week, let's all take a moment to reach out and make space for meaningful connection, at home, at work, at school, and throughout our communities. 💙 Who could you reach out to this week?

Mentis Assist has a range of psychosocial support programs that can connect you to our group programs or to groups within the community.

What does culturally safe care mean?

At Mentis Assist, culturally safe care means providing support that respects who you are, where you come from, what matters to you, and how your experiences have shaped your wellbeing.

Culture can include many things, connection to Country, language, family, community, spirituality, identity, traditions, values, lived experience, migration history, faith, gender, sexuality, disability and personal beliefs.

Culturally safe care means you should feel respected, listened to and free from judgement when accessing support.

For us, this means we aim to:

• Listen without making assumptions
• Respect your identity, culture, values and lived experience
• Ask what is important to you and your support needs
• Work alongside you, your family, carers or community, where you choose
• Support access to interpreters or culturally appropriate services when needed
• Acknowledge the ongoing impacts of discrimination, racism, stigma, trauma and exclusion
• Continue learning, reflecting and improving how we provide care

At Mentis Assist, culturally safe care is not about expecting people to fit into our services. It is about shaping our support around each person, so they feel seen, respected and heard.

Everyone deserves mental health support that feels safe, inclusive and respectful.

🎨 Exciting news for our Creative Possibilities art group!

Mentis Assist has received a $5,000 grant through Metro Trains’ Moving Melbourne Community Grants Program. Our application was one of only 14 successful projects selected from over 120 submissions.

The application was developed and submitted by Deb and Kerry, Mental Health Practitioners in our Early Intervention Psychosocial Support Response program. We are incredibly proud of their initiative and commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for our clients.

Last Thursday, Kerry accepted the award on behalf of Mentis Assist at the presentation ceremony. She was joined by our Director of Operations and Business Development, Jayne, and EIPSR practitioner Jo, who has also been instrumental in supporting the art group. Deb was unfortunately unable to attend as she is currently on leave.

The funding will enable approximately 20 participants to build their confidence, creativity and social connections through art, culminating in a public exhibition at Cube 37 in Frankston.

A heartfelt thank you to Metro Trains for supporting this important project—and congratulations to Deb, Kerry and Jo! We can’t wait to see what our talented participants create.
