Small Steps, Big Impact!
If there’s one strategy we find ourselves recommending time and time again, it’s task analysis! 🙌
It’s a tried-and-tested approach that can make a big difference in supporting children’s learning, participation and independence.
So, what exactly is task analysis?
Simply put, it’s breaking down a task or routine into smaller, more manageable steps. For neurodivergent learners, this can be particularly beneficial in supporting executive functioning, reducing cognitive load and creating greater predictability.
But here’s the thing… it’s not just for neurodivergent children! 💛
In early childhood settings, ALL children are developing the skills needed to plan, sequence, remember and complete everyday tasks.
☀️ Take applying sunscreen, for example.
What might seem like one simple instruction actually involves multiple steps. By breaking these down and providing visual supports, we can make expectations clearer, reduce the demands on working memory and create more opportunities for children to participate independently.
And remember, it’s not about doing things FOR children. It’s about providing the right supports so they can participate in ways that work for them.
Sometimes the smallest adjustments make the biggest difference!
