In a depressive episode, tomorrow feels impossibly far away. Next week might as well be next decade. Your brain can't generate images of a future self doing things, enjoying things, or even just existing without this pain.

This temporal collapse makes depression feel permanent—like it's the only state that has ever existed or will ever exist.
But here's the thing: we can counter this distortion through what I call "scaffolding the future."

The gravity of this finding cannot be overstated... fMRI studies were purported to be the most accurate of brain research when I was studying at uni yet even then, we were informed, there was still a lot we don't know about how it all (the brain) works... yet for the last 20 years more and more research has been underpinned by data from this research method - our understanding and theories of mental illness, ADHD, autism...

So many conclusions can now be questioned and hopefully re-assessed using alternative methodology.

fMRI Signals Often Misread Neural Activity

New findings overturn a core assumption behind decades of fMRI research.

By directly measuring oxygen use in the brain, scientists discovered that increases in fMRI signals often do not reflect higher neural activity.

In many cases, the opposite occurred: regions working harder simply extracted more oxygen without boosting blood flow.

The results suggest that thousands of past studies may need reinterpretation, especially those involving aging or vascular differences.

A new focus on energy consumption may offer far more accurate brain mapping.
