Happy NAIDOC Week 2026 πŸ–€πŸ’›β€οΈ

This year's NAIDOC Week marks an incredible milestone with the theme "50 Years of Deadly."

For 50 years, NAIDOC Week has celebrated the strength, resilience, achievements and rich cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The word "deadly" is a proud First Nations expression meaning something is excellent, powerful or amazing, making this year's theme a celebration of the people, communities and leaders who have shaped the NAIDOC movement and continue to inspire generations to come.

At The Neuro Nest, we believe everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, valued and connected. We recognise that connection to culture, Country, family and community plays a vital role in wellbeing, identity and belonging.

This week, we're proud to celebrate alongside our community by attending local NAIDOC events and creating a collaborative community artwork that reflects connection, shared stories and the strength that comes from bringing people together. Every brushstroke represents a unique person, a unique story, and the beautiful diversity that makes our community stronger.

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we live, work and play, and we pay our deepest respects to Elders past and present. We honour the knowledge, wisdom and cultural traditions that have been shared for tens of thousands of years and continue to enrich our communities today.

As we celebrate 50 Years of Deadly, we also celebrate the power of community, inclusion and belonging. We are committed to continuing to learn, listen and create spaces where every person feels welcomed, respected and empowered to be themselves.

Happy NAIDOC Week.

Today, at The Neuro Nest, we acknowledge National Sorry Day.

We take time to reflect on the history, pain and ongoing impact experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, particularly the Stolen Generations, and we honour the strength, resilience and wisdom of First Nations communities.

At The Neuro Nest, we believe every person deserves to feel safe, seen, heard and connected. We recognise the importance of culture, identity, belonging and community in helping children, young people and families thrive.

Today is a day for listening, learning, reflecting and walking forward together with compassion, respect and understanding. πŸ–€πŸ’›β€οΈ

A child who cannot put shoes on.
A child who explodes over homework.
A child who says β€œno” to everything.
A child who seems desperate to stay in control.

People often see bad behaviour.

But sometimes there is far more going on underneath.

Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a term used to describe children who experience an extreme need to avoid everyday demands and expectations. For many, demands can trigger intense anxiety, overwhelm or distress - especially when they feel pressured, unsafe or out of control.

These children are often labelled manipulative, oppositional, rude, lazy or attention seeking.

But many are struggling far more than people realise.

The heartbreaking part?
The more pressure they feel, the harder things can become.

Too many families are judged.
Too many children are punished instead of understood.

Please note - PDA is not currently recognised as a separate diagnosis in diagnostic manuals such as the DSM-5 or ICD-11. However, organisations including the NHS, the National Autistic Society and PDA Society use the term to describe and support children who show this pattern of behaviours and experiences.

Today, we celebrate the incredible mums, carers, and mother figures walking alongside neurodivergent children and young people every single day. πŸ’œ

The mums who advocate fiercely.

The mums who learn, adapt, support, regulate, comfort, and encourage.

The mums who celebrate the little wins that others may never see.

The mums who carry so much behind the scenes with endless love and strength.

At The Neuro Nest, we see you. We see the dedication, the exhaustion, the resilience, and the beautiful connection you build with your children every day.

Motherhood doesn’t look the same for everyone, and today can hold many emotions. Whether today feels joyful, complicated, heavy, or somewhere in between, we’re sending love to you.

Thank you for creating safe spaces where your children can feel accepted, understood, and celebrated for exactly who they are. 🌿

Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at The Neuro Nest πŸ’

Tired of services that ask you to mask, mould, or magically fit a mould that wasn't built for you?
Same. That's why we created The Neuro Nest.

We're a neurodivergent-affirming space in Raymond Terrace, part therapy, part clubhouse, part "finally, somewhere I can just exhale."

Here's what's on offer:
🌟 Therapy for kids & teens β€” emotional regulation and connection, the affirming way
🌟 Adults Program (18+) β€” life, work, identity and community, on your terms
🌟 Neuro Club β€” social inclusion for all ages
🌟 Holiday Programs β€” outings, gaming, art, messy play & sensory-friendly fun
🌟 1:1 Psychology & Social Work β€” for when you need a space that's just yours

Every session = 1:1 support.
Every space = sensory-considered.
Every person = welcomed exactly as they are.

No agendas. No "right" words. No earning your spot.
Come find your play, your people, and your place. 🌿

🌺 Lest We Forget 🌺
Today, on ANZAC Day, we pause to remember and honour the Australians and New Zealanders who have served our nations with courage, sacrifice, and unwavering spirit.

We remember those who gave their lives, those who returned forever changed, and the families who carried the weight of their service alongside them.

To our veterans, service men and women, and their loved ones: thank you.

Your sacrifice has shaped the freedoms and the country we are privileged to share today.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Lest We Forget 🌹
