In Australia, around 1.8 million blood donations are needed every year. Blood can't be manufactured. It can only come from people who choose to give.

Whole blood. Plasma. Platelets. Each one helps different patients — from premature babies and accident victims to people undergoing cancer treatment and complex surgery.

Donating blood:
✅ Is safe and takes about an hour
✅ Is free to do, and the impact is enormous
✅ Is something most healthy adults can do
✅ Can save up to 3 lives per donation

If you've ever thought about donating but haven't yet, today is a wonderful day to book your first appointment at the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood service.

And if you're a regular donor — from all of us at AHA Clinics, and on behalf of the patients you'll never meet: thank you.

Your generosity is literally life-changing.

If you're a veteran or current serving member of the Australian Defence Force... this one's for you.

Through the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA), eligible veterans can access a wide range of health and medical services, often fully covered. But navigating what's available can feel overwhelming.

At AHA Clinics, we support DVA cardholders with:
🎖️ DVA health care cards (Gold, White, and Orange cards) — understanding what each covers
📋 GP Management Plans and Team Care Arrangements — coordinating your care across multiple health professionals
🩺 Chronic disease management — for conditions related to or affected by service
🧠 Mental health support — including referrals to specialised veterans' mental health services
💊 Prescriptions and specialist referrals under DVA arrangements

The GPs at AHA are experienced in working with DVA patients and can help you understand your entitlements, set up a care plan, and connect you with the right services, including Allied Health. You've served your community. We're here to serve yours.

If you're a veteran with a DVA card and haven't yet spoken to a GP about your entitlements, it's worth booking in. You may be entitled to more than you realise.

Most men who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are surprised. Not because they weren't paying attention, but because for years, there was genuinely nothing to notice.

"By the time type 2 diabetes shows up in symptoms, it's often been developing quietly for a decade," says Dr Matthew Parker, GP at AHA Clinics. "Feeling fine is not the same as being well."

The good news? Caught early (in the prediabetes stage) blood sugar levels can often be returned to normal through lifestyle changes alone. No medication required.

A simple fasting blood test or HbA1c is all it takes to know where you stand.

Dr Parker has a special interest in diabetes, men's health, and chronic disease management at AHA Clinics.

Most Australians have never heard of haemochromatosis. But it affects around 1 in 200 people of northern European descent, making it one of the most common genetic conditions in the country. And most people living with it have no idea.

Hereditary haemochromatosis causes the body to absorb too much iron from food. Over time, that excess iron builds up in organs (the liver, heart, joints, and pancreas) and can cause serious, irreversible damage if left untreated.

The tricky part? Early symptoms look like dozens of other things:
⚠️ Fatigue and low energy
⚠️ Joint pain — especially in the knuckles
⚠️ Abdominal discomfort
⚠️ Brain fog or poor concentration
⚠️ Low libido or hormonal changes

And here's what's genuinely remarkable about this condition: when it's caught early, it can be managed simply and effectively, often with regular blood donation or venesection (removing blood). Something that also helps others.
A simple blood test can check your iron levels. If you have a family history of haemochromatosis, or if any of the above resonates, it's worth a conversation with your GP.

This week, we want to be part of changing the stats on a condition that too few Australians know to look for.

June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, and we're opening it with a question most Australians avoid...
When did you last think about your bowel health?

Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in Australia. Around 15,000 Australians are diagnosed every year. And yet it's one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when detected early.

Here's what makes it so dangerous: for many people, there are no symptoms in the early stages. Which is exactly why the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program exists.

If you're between 45 and 74, you're eligible for a free at-home screening kit, sent to you in the post. It takes minutes. It's discreet. And it could save your life.
Haven't done yours yet? We can help.

Signs to never ignore:
🔴 Blood in or on the stool
🔴 A change in bowel habits lasting more than 2 weeks
🔴 Unexplained weight loss
🔴 Persistent abdominal pain or cramping
🔴 Fatigue that doesn't improve

Talk to your GP. Do the test. This month, and every month.

Winter has a way of creeping up on us… and so do the sniffles, coughs, and last-minute GP visits.

A little preparation now can make a big difference later 👇

Your “Before You Need a GP” Checklist:

✔️ Book your flu shot early (don’t wait until everyone else is sick)
✔️ Check your repeat prescriptions — are you running low?
✔️ Update your child’s immunisations
✔️ Restock the basics — pain relief, tissues, thermometer
✔️ Book in any check-ups you’ve been putting off
✔️ Prioritise sleep, nutrition, and hydration
✔️ Have a plan for when illness hits (after-hours options, clinic hours, etc.)

Because when winter hits, appointments fill fast — and being prepared means less stress when you need care most.

At AHA Clinics, we’re here to make it easy to stay on top of your health this season.

Book ahead. Stay ahead.

Over 1.5 million Australians are living with diabetes. And many more are living with it undiagnosed.

Managing diabetes isn't a single appointment. It's an ongoing relationship between you and your healthcare team, one that, when done well, allows people to live full, active, and healthy lives.

At AHA Clinics, diabetes care is part of our full chronic disease management program. That means your GP doesn't just treat your numbers — they look after the whole picture.

Here's what diabetes management at AHA can include:
🩸 Regular HbA1c blood tests to track long-term blood sugar levels
❤️ Cardiovascular risk monitoring — because diabetes and heart health are closely linked
👁️ Referrals for eye checks and foot care — two of the most commonly affected areas
⚖️ Weight and lifestyle support tailored to your personal situation
💊 Medication management and reviews, including insulin plans where needed
🧠 Mental health check-ins — because diabetes affects more than just the body
👥 Team-based care through Allied Health: dietitians, podiatrists, and more

Whether you're newly diagnosed, managing Type 1 or Type 2, or concerned about prediabetes, the team at AHA is here to support you every step of the way.

You don't have to figure it out alone.
