PART 2 OF THE MASSIVE SPIEL INCOMING... 😅

If you made it through Part 1, thank you 😂❤️

This is about what upcoming insurance and backup midwife requirements could mean for rural families, rural midwives and the future of homebirth.

Over the past year, I’ve been privileged to provide continuity of care to families across the Wheatbelt, Goldfields and Peel. But from 2027, that pathway may become much harder.

One major concern is the requirement for an appropriately insured backup midwife.

In metro areas, another midwife may be nearby. In rural areas, the closest private midwife could be hundreds of kilometres away.

Without an insured backup within the required distance, I may not be able to legally plan a homebirth — even when a woman is suitable and wants that option.

And this isn’t just about me.

It’s about rural families having real choices.
It’s about rural midwives being able to practise.
And it’s about protecting the pathway for the next generation of private midwives.

Part 1 of 2 Massive spiel incoming… but this is really important. 👇

I’m genuinely worried about what’s happening with homebirth insurance and what it could mean for access to homebirth — especially in rural areas.

Over the past year, I’ve been the primary midwife for 5 births where my backup support wasn’t another private midwife.

And sometimes, having an appropriately qualified backup person available is what makes homebirth possible.

But from January 2027, that could change.

The proposed changes mean that a backup birth attendant may need to have their own specific insurance.

Now, I completely understand why insurance is important. I have insurance. But I attend births regularly as both a primary midwife and backup.

What about someone who only attends a couple of births a year to support another midwife?

When you factor in insurance, registration, mandatory training, family, work, travel and everything else… it might simply not be feasible.

And if those people can no longer provide backup?

What happens to access to homebirth in rural areas?

This isn’t just about insurance.

It could have a massive impact on whether families can access homebirth care at all.

There’s a lot more to this story — including what this could mean for my own practice — and I’ll talk about that in my next post.

POV: You’re in your third trimester and suddenly walking is a full-body workout😂🤰

The waddle has made itself known
Your pelvis feels like it’s falling apart
Your bladder has the capacity of a thimble

And somehow… you’re still expected to “go for a nice little walk” 😂

Third trimester mummas, what was your biggest third trimester symptom? 👇

🤰✨ Your placenta is doing A LOT more than you may realise…

While you’re going about your day, this incredible organ is working behind the scenes to support your baby’s growth 💪🏼 🤍

Here are 5 important jobs your placenta does in pregnancy:

1️⃣ Delivers oxygen to your baby
2️⃣ Transfers essential nutrients
3️⃣ Helps remove waste products
4️⃣ It’s the hormone ‘brain’ of pregnancy
5️⃣ Helps create the right environment for your baby to grow

And the wildest part? Your placenta is your body’s only temporary organ! 🤯

From August 1–7, we celebrate World Breastfeeding Week.

This year, the focus is “Breastfeeding for a sustainable start in life: Strengthen what works" with a focus on nutrition, food security, and evaluating proven community support systems.

Breastfeeding can be beautiful, but it can also be challenging. Every feeding journey is unique, and every mother deserves to feel supported, informed, and never judged. In addition, every woman should be given the tools and support to breastfeed if she wishes to do so.

Whether you're exclusively breastfeeding, combination feeding, expressing, or your journey looked different than you hoped or expected, your love for your baby is what matters most 💛

As a midwife, I believe every family deserves care that is compassionate, respectful, evidence-based, and empowering - because when mothers are supported, babies thrive too.

✨ Share one piece of advice that has helped you most in your feeding journey. I’d love to hear it! - Holly x

I had to throw away over HALF of my emergency medication… and I was happy about it! 🥳🤍

Recently, I had to order more oxytocin because more than 50% of my stock had expired.

Normally, expired medication isn't something to celebrate.

But in this case, it meant something wonderful.

These medications are carried to help prevent and treat excessive bleeding after birth (postpartum haemorrhage). They're essential to have available because birth can be unpredictable.

Yet in more than 18 months of working as a private midwife, I simply hadn't needed to use a large portion of them.

That made me pause and reflect on something incredible...

✨ Continuity of midwifery care matters 💕

One recent prospective cohort study found postpartum haemorrhage occurred in 3.5% of women receiving midwifery-led care, compared with 10.3% in the comparison group receiving standard hospital care 🏥

Of course, birth outcomes depend on many factors, and emergency medications remain essential - complications can still happen to anyone. But it's encouraging to see real life evidence of what continuity of care can mean to women.

Would having the same midwife throughout pregnancy and birth matter to you? Let me know in the comments🤗 Holly x

RSV isn't just another winter cold 🤧

For many babies it's mild, but for some—especially those under 6 months—it can lead to bronchiolitis, pneumonia and hospitalisation 🤒

The great news is that Australia now offers a free maternal RSV vaccine through the National Immunisation Program. When given during pregnancy, it helps pass protective antibodies to your baby before birth 💉

Research from hospitals across Australia has already shown a 43.8% reduction in RSV hospitalisations in babies under three months following the program's introduction.

If you're pregnant, speak with your midwife, GP or obstetrician about whether the RSV vaccine is recommended for you 👩🏽‍⚕️
