Strong bones. Strong body. Stronger for Life.

Did you know that bone loss doesn’t have to be accepted as an inevitable part of ageing?

Research consistently shows that the right type of strength training can help maintain bone density, improve balance, reduce falls risk, and build the confidence to stay active and independent.

Our Stronger for Life program is a physiotherapist-led small group exercise class designed for people who want to:

🦴 Support bone health and osteoporosis management
💪 Build strength safely and effectively
🚶 Improve balance, mobility and confidence
🌸 Navigate menopause with evidence-based exercise
❤️ Stay active, independent and doing the things they love

Every participant is individually screened and exercises are tailored to their abilities and goals, ensuring a safe and supportive environment.

You’ve probably heard sciatica described as a ‘trapped nerve’…
But it’s usually more complicated than that.

Sciatica is often caused by irritation of a nerve in the lower back.
That irritation can create pain down the leg, pins and needles, numbness, burning, weakness… even pain in the calf or foot.

And here’s the important part:

Pain does NOT always mean damage is getting worse.

Nerves become sensitive.
Inflamed nerves can overreact to movement, sitting, bending, coughing… sometimes even stress and poor sleep.

That’s why complete rest usually isn’t the answer.

For most people, gradual movement, walking, exercise, and progressive loading help recovery far more than lying still waiting for it to disappear.

Recovery is rarely perfectly linear.
Flare-ups can happen.
That does NOT necessarily mean you’ve re-injured yourself.

Most people improve significantly over weeks to months with the right management.

BUT…

If you develop:
loss of bladder or bowel control,
numbness around the groin (saddle area),
rapidly worsening weakness in the lower limbs, or severe unexplained symptoms…

You SHOULD seek urgent medical attention immediately.

At Strath Physio, we focus on understanding:

What’s driving YOUR symptoms,
calming the irritated nerve,
restoring confidence in movement,
and gradually building you back to normal activity.

Because the goal isn’t just reducing pain.

It’s getting your life back.

P.S. Ask your clinician for a copy of this Sciatica booklet when you are in clinic next!

P.P.S. There are absolutely times your clinician will need to escalate sciatica for imaging and surgical intervention. Watch out for the follow-up video on this nuance!

In 2013, I co-authored a systematic review suggesting shockwave therapy may have a role in chronic Achilles tendinopathy.

In 2026, newer evidence has challenged that position.
That is science.

Good healthcare is not about defending what we once believed. It is about updating when better evidence arrives.

For Achilles tendinopathy, the foundation is still progressive loading, strength, education, load management and a clear return-to-running or return-to-sport plan.

Machines may have a role sometimes.

But they should not replace proper rehab. Q. Shockwave for Achilles pain

It's a bitter-sweet moment for our team as Cheryl steps into retirement from her regular role with us.

Over the past 3 years, Cheryl has been such a valued part of our clinic. So many of you will know her for her kindness, her skill, and the genuine care she shows to every single person who walks through our doors. She's made a real impact on our practice, and we'll miss her terribly around the clinic!

The good news is, she's not going far (yet) Cheryl will still be helping us out here and there in a casual capacity (we couldn't let her go completely!).
As she steps back, Charlie will be taking over her role. We're really excited to welcome Charlie into the position and know she will be a familiar face to many of you already.
Please join us in wishing Cheryl all the very best for this next chapter, and in giving Charlie a warm welcome into her new role.
