🔬 Calling future researchers!
We're funding a PhD who could help transform the future of hearing loss treatment for Australian children.

One in every 500 babies is born with permanent hearing loss, and for around half of those children, the cause is genetic. The challenge is that we still don't know which genes are responsible for most inherited hearing loss in WA.

This exciting research project will investigate the genomes of more than 100 WA children with hearing loss and help build the foundations for future gene therapies designed for Australian families.

The successful candidate will work with leading experts in hearing science, genetics and ENT medicine, and complete a placement with the Australian Genome Research Facility at UWA.

Ear Science Institute Australia and Lions Hearing Clinics were pleased to participate in the Ageing Well Expo with Principal Sponsor Juniper 2026 on 31 July and 1 August, joining more than 120 exhibitors and engaging with thousands of Western Australians interested in healthy ageing and wellbeing.

Across the two-day event, our teams connected with hundreds of attendees, providing hearing screenings, sharing evidence-based hearing health information and supporting people to take the next step in their hearing care.

Highlights included Elisha Randall’s Let’s Talk Hearing presentation and Chief Operating Officer – Clinical, Sebastian Ryan, participating in a live 6PR broadcast, exploring the role of hearing health in overall wellbeing and how the service offering at Lions Hearing Clinics differ to other providers.

The expo provided a valuable opportunity to demonstrate the research-driven, patient-focused care behind Ear Science and it was encouraging to see such strong community interest in hearing health and healthy ageing.

We’re proud to share that Xinxing Fu, recently represented Ear Science Institute Australia at the World Health Organization (WHO) (WHO) Strategic Planning Meeting of WHO Collaborating Centres and Organizations in Official Relations for Ear and Hearing Care in Beijing, China.

The meeting brought together leading experts and representatives from 11 countries to discuss global priorities and collaborative strategies to advance ear and hearing care worldwide. On behalf of Ear Science, Xinxing presented our work across hearing health promotion, clinical services, research and innovation, professional education, and international collaboration.

Key discussions focused on priorities for 2026–2028, including:
🔹 Digital hearing care solutions
🔹 Strengthening global research and data collection
🔹 Supporting the implementation of WHO tools in local settings
🔹 Developing international standards to improve hearing health outcomes

This important engagement strengthens Ear Science’s collaboration with the WHO and international partners, reinforcing our commitment to improving access to high-quality ear and hearing care through research, knowledge sharing, capacity building, and global partnerships.

Together, we can create a world where more people have access to the hearing care they need.

Thanks to support from a Telethon7 Perth equipment grant, Ear Science researchers are using the CLARIOstar PLUS multi-mode reader (BMG LABTECH) to advance treatments for Western Australian children living with otitis media, one of the common causes of conductive hearing loss. 🧬

Project lead, Dr Filippo Valente and Dr Christine Bacal have successfully developed a multi-layered silk device capable of sustained drug release, improving current therapies delivered via conventional ear drops. This innovation enables a single-dose treatment that releases antibiotics for more than 14 days, directly to the eardrum.

On Monday 27 July, the Australian Government will conduct a national test of AusAlert, Australia's new emergency warning system.

At approximately:
🕛 12:00 pm AWST – Western Australia
🕜 1:30 pm ACST – Northern Territory, South Australia and Broken Hill (NSW)
🕑 2:00 pm AEST – Queensland, New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Victoria and Tasmania

The alert will be sent to compatible mobile phones, tablets and smart watches.

If your hearing aid or cochlear implant is connected to your phone or other device via Bluetooth, you may hear the alert through your hearing device. This is expected and does not indicate a problem with your hearing aid or cochlear implant.

Research shows people with prediabetes and diabetes may experience hearing loss earlier than those without diabetes.

A study by Dr Robert Eikelboom and colleagues at Ear Science Institute Australia, working with the Busselton Healthy Ageing Study, found this link is particularly strong in people under 60 years old. Importantly, even people with high blood sugar levels (pre-diabetes) are at increased risk of hearing loss. This highlights why hearing health should be part of routine diabetes care.
