CliniKids are seeking autistic kids aged 8-12 to take part in a new study! We need the help of children and their caregivers to test the effects of a sensory vest on anxiety.

Who can participate? Children who:
💜 Have a diagnosis of autism
💜 Are aged 8 -12
💜 Experience anxiety and sensory problems

What are we investigating?
💡 Many autistic children have trouble processing sensory information, and this can make it difficult for them to regulate everyday emotions.
💡 Specialised clothing has been developed to help keep the sensory system calm - and we want to know if this may help kids manage anxiety.

Register your expression of interest: https://bit.ly/4newJA0

The study is being led by La Trobe University.

CliniKids Professor Mirko Uljarevic, based at The Kids Research Institute Australia and The University of Western Australia, has been featured on Nine News discussing his groundbreaking autism research.

Professor Uljarevic’s study will transform clinical practice by ensuring that early supports for autistic and developmentally delayed kids are matched to each unique child’s strengths and needs.

Professor Uljarevic’s work at The Kids is possible thanks to the FHRI Fund and the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation.

Can wearing a sensory vest support anxiety? Help us find out! Many autistic children have trouble processing sensory information, and this can make it difficult for them to regulate everyday emotions.

Autism Understanding Month is the perfect time to pause and learn more about why the language we choose matters. 💙

Using inclusive language helps create environments where autistic people feel respected, understood, and represented.

🧠 Neurodiversity is the idea that every person has a different brain and a different way of experiencing the world.

♾️ Neurodivergent describes individuals who have a brain that diverges from what is considered the norm.

👥 A neurodiverse group includes people with multiple neurotypes, for example, autistic and non‑autistic people together.

At CliniKids, we’re committed to using neuro-affirming language, words that respect and reflect the preferences of the autistic community.

We’ve created a simple guide to help you learn the terms you may hear and understand the language currently preferred according to our research.

Are you a parent of a child aged 0 - 5 years old? You may be eligible to join The Flourishing Child, a study led by ORIGINS at The Kids Research Institute Australia.

Backed by decades of child health research, this study is focused on improving children’s mental health and wellbeing by helping parents and carers build confidence in supporting their child’s early development.

Families may be invited to explore a new ‘Flourishing Check’ and a ‘Pathway Tool’ designed to identify areas where their child needs more support, and connect them with the right resources and local services tailored to their child's needs.

It’s open to parents and primary carers of children aged 0–5 years in the Perth metro area, and families will receive between $20 - $40 e-gift cards at up to four timepoints.

Talking to your child about their autism diagnosis 💙

It’s natural for humans to seek to understand themselves - and during Autism Understanding Month, we want to share how valuable it can be for a child to learn about their autism and connect with the autistic community.

A child’s reaction to an autism diagnosis can vary, and what we know from research with autistic teens and adults that disclosure is generally a positive experience.

Here’s what we know:

💙 Start the conversation early

💙 Multiple times, multiple sources – use neuroaffirming books, videos and voices

💙 Link in with the autistic community – connect your child with peers

💙 Be real – acknowledge the challenges

💙 Consider your own feelings – are you equipped to have this conversation?

However you choose to talk to your child, it’s important to use words that help them understand who they are and support them to feel good about themselves.

Up on our site today, CliniKids Speech Pathology Lead Aria May explores how to talk to your child about a recent autism diagnosis. Read here: https://shorturl.at/jNMrt
