❄️💙 Join Us in the Fight Against MND 💙❄️

This year's Big Freeze has taken on a deeply personal meaning for our team at Border Podiatry Centre.

Our podiatrist, Kate, recently learned that her beloved auntie has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) - a devastating disease that affects thousands of Australians and currently has no cure, making research and support services more important than ever.

We're proud to support the Big Freeze and the incredible work being done to raise funds for vital MND research. Every donation, no matter how big or small, helps bring us one step closer to better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.
If you're able, please consider making a donation and helping us turn hope into action. Click on the link below to purchase your own virtual beanie.

Together, we can help fight MND. 💙

Winter is fast approaching and with it chilblains are starting to appear again.

While chilblains primarily affect the skin and are not typically considered a serious medical condition, they can cause discomfort and may require treatment, especially if complications arise.

Podiatrists may provide the following services related to chilblains:

Assessment and diagnosis: Podiatrists can examine the affected feet, assess the severity of the chilblains, and confirm the diagnosis. They may also evaluate the individual's foot health and circulation to determine the risk of complications.

Treatment recommendations: Podiatrists may recommend appropriate treatments for chilblains, which may include keeping the feet warm and dry, applying moisturizing creams or lotions to soothe the skin, and avoiding further exposure to cold. They may also suggest specific footwear or socks to help protect the feet and improve circulation.

Prevention strategies: Podiatrists can provide advice on preventing chilblains from recurring, such as wearing warm, insulated footwear during cold weather, avoiding prolonged exposure to cold temperatures, and maintaining good foot hygiene.

If you're experiencing chilblains or have concerns about your foot health, it's essential to consult a healthcare professional, such as a podiatrist, for personalized advice and treatment.

At Border Podiatry Centre we can help you get rid of chilblains and stop them from coming back. Call us on 02 6024 5577 to book an appointment.

Cold weather can be tough on your feet ❄️

Chilblains are painful, itchy red or purple swellings that develop when skin is exposed to cold temperatures and then warmed up too quickly. They commonly affect the toes and can make winter uncomfortable.

Common symptoms include:
• Itching or burning sensations
• Red, purple or swollen skin
• Tenderness or pain
• Dry or cracked skin

To help prevent chilblains:
✔ Keep feet warm and dry
✔ Avoid sudden temperature changes
✔ Wear warm socks and well-fitting footwear
✔ Keep moving to improve circulation

If chilblains are becoming painful, recurring, or affecting your daily activities, the team at Border Podiatry Centre can help with treatment and advice to keep your feet healthy this winter.

Is your child complaining of heel pain after sport or activity? It could be Sever’s Disease; one of the most common causes of heel pain in growing children.

Sever’s Disease occurs when the growth plate in the heel becomes irritated during periods of rapid growth, especially in active kids aged 8–16. Sports involving running and jumping like soccer, AFL, basketball, and netball can often make symptoms worse.

Signs to look out for:
• Heel pain during or after activity
• Limping or walking on tiptoes
• Tenderness at the back of the heel
• Pain that improves with rest

The good news? Sever’s Disease is temporary and very manageable with the right treatment. At Border Podiatry Centre, we can help with:
✔️ Footwear advice
✔️ Stretching programs
✔️ Orthotics or heel lifts
✔️ Activity modification strategies
✔️ Treatment plans to keep kids active and comfortable

Early treatment can help reduce pain and get your child back to doing what they love.

If your child is experiencing ongoing heel pain, book an appointment with our team today.

Is your child complaining of heel pain after sport or activity? It could be Sever’s Disease, one of the most common causes of heel pain in growing children.

Despite the name, Sever’s Disease isn’t actually a disease. It’s a growth-related condition caused by irritation of the growth plate in the heel, often affecting active children aged 8-16.

Common signs include:
• Heel pain during or after sport
• Limping or walking on tiptoes
• Tenderness at the back of the heel
• Pain that improves with rest

Sports involving running and jumping like soccer, netball, basketball and athletics can increase the risk.

The good news? With the right treatment and management, most children recover well and return to the activities they love.

At Border Podiatry Centre, we assess growing feet and provide tailored treatment plans that may include:
✔ Footwear advice
✔ Stretching programs
✔ Orthotics or heel supports
✔ Activity modification strategies

If your child has ongoing heel pain, don’t ignore it, early treatment can make a big difference.

While many nail salons provide a relaxing experience, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks to your foot health if hygiene and proper practices aren’t followed.

At Border Podiatry Centre, we often see problems caused by poor nail care, including:
- Ingrown toenails from nails being cut too short or incorrectly
- Fungal nail infections spread through unsterilised tools
- Cuts or skin trauma from aggressive filing or trimming
- Corns and calluses worsened by improper treatment
- Increased risk of infection for people with diabetes or poor circulation

Your feet deserve expert care. If you have painful nails, thickened nails, ingrown toenails or ongoing foot concerns, a podiatrist is the safest choice for professional treatment and advice.
