FAIRY GARDEN | Bow Valley Commons residents worked with Christy, an art therapist with CRATE Art Therapy, over a series of six sessions this summer. Each week residents focused on a new artist and art form.

During their last session together, residents made miniature fairy gardens. These tiny, carefully curated spaces, originating from Victorian Europe, portray a whimsical and enchanted world, designed to attract fairies and create a magical ambiance. 💫 Residents enjoyed adding their own special touches and trinkets.

Thank you for the fanciful art session, Christy!

BUILDING | Jim Stewart of Retired Recycled Creations recently worked with Bridgeland residents, volunteers and the Life, Learning and Leisure team to create and decorate cardboard mini-houses and buildings. 🏚️

The building templates were designed by Jim and were glued together like puzzle pieces. Volunteers from Heritage Realty and ENMAX cut the templates, and assembled and glued the houses so residents could decorate and add their own homey and creative touches.

Some residents created yards and little vignettes for their buildings, complete with pets and people alike.

Thanks to Jim, our corporate volunteer teams, and the Life, Learning and Leisure facilitators who worked together to make this a fun and unique experience across Silvera’s Bridgeland communities!

HORSE THERAPY | Meet Hershey & Kisses! 🍫💋

Gilchrist residents and employees alike were in for a really sweet treat when miniature therapy horses Hershey and Kisses stopped by for a recent visit!

These adorable mini guests brought big smiles and cuddles to residents living in both Gilchrist's supportive and independent living communities. There were a few actual kisses too!

Sometimes, the best therapy comes with four hooves and a lot of personality. Talk about a sweet little visit! 🐴💕

VOLUNTEER SEARCH | Cycling on a trishaw bike has helped Terry Paden, a resident of Aspen Commons, regain a sense of freedom since he lost his vision in 2024.

Terry spent his life enjoying outdoor sports including rollerblading, windsurfing and biking. Through Silvera’s partnership with Cycling Without Age, he has found a safe and social way to get outside and enjoy nature again.

Special thanks to volunteer trishaw pilot Aimee Trudel, who gives dozens of Silvera residents bike rides each summer!

We are looking for additional trishaw bike pilots! If you're interested in this unique volunteer opportunity, please reach out: [email protected].

Thanks to Bucci Developments Ltd. for sponsoring this event, as well as the Silvera employees and volunteers from our Bridgeland campus for making it all happen!

ART SHOW | Residents from Aspen, Bow Valley and Spruce Commons recently came together to celebrate the completion of a 10-week YMCA art program with a special art show at Willow Park on the Bow.

For many participants, the classes became a meaningful highlight of their week. Residents say they enjoyed learning new skills, trying something outside their comfort zone and seeing their confidence and creativity grow along the way.

Family and friends, Silvera residents and employees, and members of the YMCA art team gathered at the art show to admire the artwork and celebrate the artists.

NAVIGATORS | It has been a year since Silvera introduced Resident Resource Navigators to help connect residents with important senior supports in Calgary. RRNs Faduma Warsame and Susana Benjamin help residents access government benefits and financial supports such as pensions, health supports and resources, prescription and dental programs, along with social services. They also provide information about other common resources seniors need but may not know about or know where to begin looking. Last spring, two Mount Royal University journalism students wrote a story about the RRN program. For a link to their story, type these words into Google: Calgary Journal resident resource navigators. We tried including the link here, but it was deleted by Facebook.

HERB GARDEN | A small garden is growing something special at Beaverdam Commons.

Our Dining Services team recently installed a raised planter filled with herbs, including basil, parsley, chives, thyme, rosemary, mint, and dill. Residents are helping to water, trim, and harvest the herbs this summer, enjoying outdoor visits while contributing to meals made with these fresh, homegrown beauties.

Beyond the garden’s delicious benefits, the scents, textures, and routines of caring for plants and gardens can spark memories for residents in memory care, encouraging conversation and creating opportunities for connection.
