One of the most prescribed formulas in Chinese medicine.
Xiao Yao San is often translated as Free and Easy Wanderer — a beautiful name for a formula traditionally used when life feels anything but free and easy.
In clinic, I think about Xiao Yao San when I see signs of stress affecting the body:
• PMS and mood changes
• Irritability and frustration
• Digestive symptoms that worsen with stress
• Bloating and abdominal discomfort
• Tension headaches
• Feeling emotionally "stuck"
From a Chinese medicine perspective, it helps when Liver Qi becomes constrained and begins affecting digestion, energy, and emotional wellbeing.
What I love about this formula is that it doesn't simply "calm stress." It addresses the pattern underneath it — supporting both the movement of Qi and the systems that have become depleted along the way.
As always, Chinese herbal formulas should be prescribed by a qualified practitioner. The same symptoms can arise from very different patterns, which is why individualized treatment matters.
Have you ever noticed your digestion, mood, or cycle change during stressful periods?
