One of the loneliest questions can be just one small box on a form:

“Who is your emergency contact?”

Not everyone has a name they feel able to write down.

You can have colleagues, neighbours, people on your phone, even people you speak to most days, and still not have someone you’d call from A&E, trust with a spare key, or ask for help at midnight.

That kind of loneliness is easy to miss. It doesn’t always look like someone sitting alone. Sometimes it looks like carrying everything yourself because asking feels impossible.

If this feels familiar, please know there is no shame in it. Support circles can change, and they can grow slowly. A first step might be thinking about one person who feels safe enough for a small conversation. Or telling a support worker, GP, colleague or friend, “I don’t really have anyone to put down as my emergency contact.”

And if you know someone who lives alone, is new to the area, has lost touch with people, or always says they’re “fine”, check in. A simple “Who could you call if you needed help?” might open an important conversation.
