This weekend Captain Tommy Amirault was presented with the Lewis D’Entremont Memorial Award by Marilyn and Michelle D'Entremont. This award is in memory of Lewis D’Entremont, a fisherman who died in a workplace tragedy in 2004 when he fell overboard due to faulty equipment on board a herring seiner. The award is dedicated in his name to those who demonstrate an ongoing effort for safety excellence in the Nova Scotia Seafood Industry.
Tommy is a 6th-generation fisherman who has been involved in the commercial fishery for 36 years, 24 of which he captained his own vessel. Tommy fishes out of Pubnico, one of the largest fishing ports in Nova Scotia, and has called this his home port his entire life. Tommy is a respected voice in the fishery, serving as President of the Coldwater Lobster Association Board of Directors. Tommy was also one of the founding members of Coldwater Lobster Association, where he served as a director from its inception in 2014. Tommy is consistently using his platform to encourage safe fishing practices. Through thoughtful and genuine social media posts, he regularly reminds fish harvesters that no catch is worth risking a life. His messages resonate because they come from someone who understands the realities of the job firsthand.
Tommy’s writing captures both the pride and the dangers of commercial fishing while reinforcing the importance of preparation, looking out for one another, and returning home safely. He helps foster a culture where safety is seen as a shared responsibility, not just a requirement.
