🐝 Big news for Halifax! 🌸
Did you know HRM is officially a certified Bee City? To celebrate, Pollinator Week 2026 is kicking off from June 22 to June 28, and there are some incredible community events lined up across the municipality!

This year’s theme is "Life on a Leaf," focusing on the native host plants that support our essential local insects throughout their entire lifecycle. 🐛✨
Whether you want to learn about urban ecology or get your hands dirty, there is something for everyone:
June 22: Kickoff at the Halifax Public Gardens 🌷
June 24: "Defending Trees, Defending Bees" panel at the Central Library 📚
June 26: "Building for Butterflies" hands-on naturalisation workshop at Flinn Park 🦋 (Registration required)
June 27: Shoreline plant medicine walk at First Lake 🌾 (Registration required)
June 28: Interactive Bee Walk & Bioblitz at Fort Needham Memorial Park 🐝 (Registration required)

It takes a hive... Did you know a single honey bee produces only about 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in her entire lifetime? It takes a massive, coordinated team effort to fill a single jar. Talk about ultimate teamwork! 🍯🐝

You don't need a massive acreage to make a huge difference for our favourite hard-working insects. Here are three quick, easy ways to make your yard the talk of the hive this season:

Plant in clusters: Bees love efficiency. Planting a dense patch of the same flower (like lavender, borage, or echinacea) makes it much easier for them to forage than scattering single plants around.

Set up a bee pub: Bees get incredibly thirsty! Put out a shallow dish filled with water and add a layer of marbles or pebbles. This gives them a perfectly safe place to land and drink without the danger of drowning.

Embrace the dandelions: Let your lawn go a little wild, especially early in the season. Those bright yellow "weeds" are actually a vital, lifesaving early food source when little else is blooming.
