Cycling season is in full swing! 📸Imke arriving to clinic on her bike.
With a lot of local cycling events happening at this time of year, we’re seeing plenty of patients ramping up their training and spending more time on the bike in preparation.
Alongside the extra miles, lower back niggles are one of the most common things we see start to appear - especially when load increases faster than the body has adapted.
A few of the key things that make a difference:
- Bike position plays a huge role. Small adjustments can often reduce strain through the lower back, which is why bike fitting can be so effective in resolving recurring issues.
- How you support your body off the bike matters just as much too. Core strength helps with stability and control, particularly as fatigue builds on longer rides.
- And then there’s the accumulation side: gradual mileage increases, changing position throughout rides and not spending long periods stiff before or after you cycle.
Our physiotherapist, Imke, works with cyclists on this every week, both in clinic and through bike fitting, so she sees how closely training load, movement habits and setup all link together.
With so many events coming up, we know a lot of you will be working towards something right now - whatever’s in your event calendar, good luck and enjoy the miles 🚲
