Cycling season is in full swing! 📸Imke arriving to clinic on her bike.

With a lot of local cycling events happening at this time of year, we’re seeing plenty of patients ramping up their training and spending more time on the bike in preparation.

Alongside the extra miles, lower back niggles are one of the most common things we see start to appear - especially when load increases faster than the body has adapted.

A few of the key things that make a difference:

- Bike position plays a huge role. Small adjustments can often reduce strain through the lower back, which is why bike fitting can be so effective in resolving recurring issues.

- How you support your body off the bike matters just as much too. Core strength helps with stability and control, particularly as fatigue builds on longer rides.

- And then there’s the accumulation side: gradual mileage increases, changing position throughout rides and not spending long periods stiff before or after you cycle.

Our physiotherapist, Imke, works with cyclists on this every week, both in clinic and through bike fitting, so she sees how closely training load, movement habits and setup all link together.

With so many events coming up, we know a lot of you will be working towards something right now - whatever’s in your event calendar, good luck and enjoy the miles 🚲

Hot take: coming back from holiday sunburnt is the fastest way to cancel your massage…

A lot of our patients book massage appointments for when they get back from holiday. Love that. We encourage that.

What we don’t love and encourage is you waltzing into clinic sunburnt!

You’ve been sightseeing, hiking, golfing, swimming, carrying luggage through airports, walking miles around a city or simply doing more than usual, travel can leave you feeling tighter, achier and ready for a reset.

In this video, Hattie gives us a glimpse into one of our relaxing massage treatments while Kirsty talks us through an important post-holiday reminder: why massage therapists can’t massage over sunburnt skin and why it’s important to let your skin recover before treatment.

Although massage might sound like exactly what you need after travelling, sunburn is damaged, inflamed skin that’s already working hard to heal. Massage techniques that would normally feel soothing and beneficial can instead increase irritation, discomfort and sensitivity when applied to sunburnt areas.

So if you’re planning a post-holiday reset with us, it’s something worth keeping in mind when booking your appointment 🌞

And for future sunny escapes… SPF is your bestie. Don’t come in looking like a 🦞

A sunny May, Tuesday at Step & Stone☀️

Amy, a busy bee🐝, in clinic as our podiatrist, Kim delivering the pre event sports massage, Hattie providing hours of relaxation and Louise supporting clients through counselling.

Kelly, our newest team member, has been in clinic offering Reiki alongside Indian head massage and Korean facials and also capturing some behind-the-scenes content 📸

Just a little glimpse into a busy, collaborative Tuesday with the team💚

Reintroducing Kim👋

If you’ve ever been in clinic when Kim’s around… you’ll know.

Usually singing, laughing or skipping her way down the corridor, Kim brings a huge amount of energy to the team and has a way of making people feel comfortable from the minute they walk through the door.

Kim has been part of the Step & Stone team since before we were even Step and Stone Health (back in the ASM days) and over the years has continued to build on her skills as a Level 4 Sports Massage Therapist through plenty of additional training and CPD.

Alongside Sports Massage Therapy, Kim also offers Hot Stones Massage, Relaxing Massage and Oncology Massage, supporting those living with or recovering from cancer. She’s completed kinesiology taping courses, is a member of the Sports Therapy Association and is continually building on her knowledge through ongoing learning and hands-on experience.

More recently, Kim has joined our Shockwave Therapy team and is excited to be integrating this into treatment options for her patients.

Kim's love for movement and recovery comes from lived experience too. Kim's running career has included plenty of ultra marathons (casual 😅) and through her own running journey has experienced injuries, rehab, sports massage and physio firsthand - something that gives her a real understanding of the frustrations, setbacks and goals many patients bring into the room.

Whether someone is coming in nervous about their first sports massage, looking for support with recovery or simply wanting an hour to switch off and relax, Kim meets people exactly where they’re at.

You’ll find Kim in Step and Stone Health, Westhill Shopping Centre:
📍 Monday 10am-5pm
📍 Tuesday & Thursday 1pm–8pm

- A major throwback to 4 YEARS AGO! Kim & Caroline at the Kiltwalk

We are rewinding to 4 years ago right after we opened our doors in Westhill Shopping Centre. One of our first events as Step and Stone Health and Kim and Caroline, two of our sports massage therapists at the time, were on pre and post event massage duty helping all of those taking part in the charity event.

It’s the 2026 Aberdeen Kiltwalk on Sunday 7th June and we have so many patient taking part this year. We won’t be there helping this year but we will be ready for all of you who need some rest and recovery afterwards.

Good luck to our patients and everyone taking part, we can’t wait to hear your stories when you are in clinic. It will be a fantastic achievement, raising money for so many charities in Aberdeen.

Shoulder pain is one of those things that sneaks up in so many different ways.

Sometimes it’s the gym. Sometimes it’s just everyday life catching up with you. And sometimes it’s a fall or an awkward movement that suddenly makes simple things like reaching or lifting feel off.

At our latest CPD evening, Kim and Imke took us through rotator cuff injuries.

We talked through how we piece things together in clinic: movement, strength, how the shoulder is behaving as a whole and how that helps guide what’s actually going to help someone.

A big part of the discussion was that decision-making process: when Sports Massage can support you, when it needs adjusting and when it’s time to refer on to Physiotherapy (aka Imke) so the you get the right level of rehab and support.

To finish off, Imke went through some of the exercises she’ll usually prescribe for rotator cuff issues, plus the kind of treatment options she might bring in depending on the person - including dry needling and Shockwave Therapy, which is one of the newer tools we’ve added at Step and Stone Health.

We love our CPD evenings to get together, use our brains and continue learning!

We were also delighted to welcome back Kirsty (currently on mat leave), she thought, what a perfect opportunity to get her brain working again.

May Round Up

Have a look at our May moments. From cheering on at Courage and Brave to fresh new website photos (camera smiles were very much activated 📸), a brilliant CPD evening with Kim and Imke and even Imke swapping four wheels for two on her bike ride to work 🚲… it’s been a busy month at Step & Stone.

Oh and it was our 4th birthday🥳

4 years of Step and Stone Health💚

It’s hard to believe that back in May 2022, Step & Stone was simply an empty shell - a blank space with Amy’s big ideas, even bigger dreams and a vision to create something more than “just a clinic.”

Fast forward 4 years and somehow that empty unit has become… this.

A place filled with movement, healing, learning, laughter and a lot of questionable dancing in reception.

From our official opening day (with Russell Anderson cutting the ribbon ✂️), to growing our incredible team, expanding our services, redeveloping our studio space, introducing new treatments, workshops and classes - Step & Stone has grown in ways we could only have hoped for.

The real magic has always been the moments in between.

Kirsty & Jenny becoming the clinic cheerleaders (and occasional dancing ghosts 👻), line dancing at Duncanos, bobbing for apples at Halloween, Christmas nights out where we absolutely found the dancefloor, CPD evenings to keep learning and strengthening our multidisciplinary approach, team yoga, social walks, mini golf rivalries, clinic awards, shockwave therapy launches and so many memories we couldn’t possibly fit into one montage.

Most importantly: the people. The team, the patients, the neighbours, the supporters, the helping hands behind the scenes. So many of you played a part in turning four walls into something that feels like a community. You know who you are and we’re so grateful.

Thank you for being part of our story so far.

19,354 appointments over the last 4 years

When we first looked at that number, even we had to stop for a second.

Because behind every single appointment has been a person trusting us with something important to them.

A runner training for their first marathon.
A parent with back pain they’ve ignored.
An athlete chasing performance goals.
Someone recovering from injury.
Someone booking time for themselves for the first time in a long time.

There’s been post-race recovery chats, pre-event nerves, rehab plans, massage naps, strength milestones, frustrating setbacks, big wins and everyday moments that matter just as much.

Over the last four years, we’ve been lucky enough to support people through all stages of movement, recovery, performance and wellbeing and when you look at it like that, 19,354 becomes a lot more than just a number.

As we head into birthday week, it’s pretty special to reflect on just how many people have been part of the journey.

So once again, thank you💚

IT’S OUR 4TH BIRTHDAY🥳

After years of planning, passion and hard work behind the scenes, seeing Step & Stone grow into what it is today still feels pretty special.

Whether you’ve been with us since the early days or only recently discovered us, thank you for supporting our small business, trusting us with your care and being part of our journey. Seeing so many of you return to clinic means the world to us.

Four years in and we still can’t quite believe we get to do this every day, looking after such amazing patients and being part of so many of your journeys.

Thank YOU and we’ll see you in clinic soon.

- Amy, Jenny, Kim, Imke, Kirsty, Izzie, Hattie, Emily, David, Cameron, Louise and Kelly.
