Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Early detection can save lives, and it starts with knowing what's normal for you.

Take a few minutes each month to check your breasts or chest and be aware of any changes. While a lump is one possible sign of breast cancer, it's not the only one.

If you notice anything unusual or different from what's normal for you, speak to your GP or make an appointment to see one of our Consultant Breast Surgeons.

How to Perform a Self-Breast Examination

Look Stand in front of a mirror with your arms by your sides, then raised above your head. Look for any changes in size, shape, skin texture, or the appearance of your ni***es.

Feel - Using the pads of your fingers, gently examine your breasts, ni***es, armpits all the way to your collar bone using small circular motions. Check all areas, applying light, medium, and firm pressure.

Check Lying Down - Lie down and repeat the examination, as breast tissue can spread out more evenly in this position.

The best time to check is a few days after your period ends. If you don't have periods, choose the same day each month.

Seek medical advice if:
• A lump or swelling in your breast, chest, or underarm area
• Any changes to your breasts or ni***es that are unusual for you
• Ongoing pain in your breast or armpit that doesn't go away

Remember, most breast changes are not cancer, but it's always important to get any new or persistent symptoms checked by a healthcare professional.

Led by Dr Rashmi Srivastava, Consultant Gynaecologist, this service provides prompt assessment for women with abnormal cervical screening results or symptoms that require further investigation.

A colposcopy is a simple procedure that uses a special microscope to closely examine the cervix. It helps identify any abnormal cell changes and, where appropriate, treatment can be discussed at the same appointment.

Our one-stop service allows many patients to have their consultation and colposcopy in a single visit, helping to reduce anxiety, minimise delays, and provide peace of mind sooner.
