MYTH vs EVIDENCE: Parkinson’s symptom management đź§
MYTH: There’s nothing you can do about Parkinson’s symptoms.
EVIDENCE: While there’s currently no cure for Parkinson’s, symptoms can be managed in a number of ways, including medication, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, exercise and other supportive treatments.
MYTH: Parkinson’s is just about tremor.
EVIDENCE: Parkinson’s can affect movement in many different ways, including stiffness, slowness, balance and gait as well as a wide range of non-motor symptoms.
MYTH: Medication is the only way to manage symptoms.
EVIDENCE: Medication is an important part of treatment, but it can sit alongside other solutions.
MYTH: If something is a Parkinson’s symptom, it must be Parkinson’s itself.
EVIDENCE: Some changes can be related to medication side effects, too. That’s why tracking symptoms and discussing changes with your Parkinson’s team is so important.
Parkinson’s is complex and symptom management shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all.
Understanding what’s happening, tracking changes and working with your healthcare team can help you find the right combination of support for you.
