Immediate past president Kevin Gustell visited Wood Street Optical in Earl Shilton as part of the centenary tour. Kevin met ABDO member Desislava (Desi) Pirkova practice director and recently retired DO Richard Heap.

Richard qualified in 1980 and Desi in 2019. Both Richard and Desi see technology changes (lenses and measuring devices) and myopia management as major changes in their careers.

Desi explained “that helping people and making them understand about spectacles allows better solutions for each patient.”

Their mission statement states this 'Our mission is to deliver a service tailored to your individual needs, ensuring your eye health, sight and hearing doesn’t limit your lifestyle'.

ABDO attends Heart of West Midlands Optical Confederation & Primary Eyecare Services 'Enhanced Eyecare Services CPD Conference'.

ABDO was delighted to attend the recent CPD conference delivered by Primary Eyecare Services and funded by Birmingham, Solihull & Black Country LOCs.

The event was an excellent opportunity for local practitioners from across the region to come together for CPD, shared learning and discussion on the continued development of primary eye care services. ABDO was represented by Ed Fox head of membership services and Max Halford clinical and policy director.

The day highlighted the vital role optical practices play in delivering more care closer to home, and the importance of continued collaboration across the sector. There was a clear emphasis on the contribution made by dispensing opticians and contact lens opticians in supporting enhanced services for patients, including the developing role of extended services CLOs. It was also a valuable opportunity for Max and Ed to meet ABDO members and optometrists from across the area, and to discuss the importance of multidisciplinary working in delivering the best possible clinical care for patients.

ABDO also welcomed the opportunity to meet Shockat Adam MP, Member of Parliament for Leicester South, who is an optometrist by profession and a strong advocate for dispensing opticians and optometrists delivering more care on the high street.

ABDO would like to thank Birmingham, Solihull & Black Country LOCs and Primary Eyecare Services for organising such a valuable and well-received event.
