St Helena Hospice helps local people in North East Essex with an incurable illness to live well and die with dignity and choice

Sarah, Stuart and Amalaketu each have different motivations for why they started to volunteer with us. However, a common reason they continue to volunteer is because of the people.

Our community volunteer Sarah, who will soon be returning to university and hopes to fit her volunteering around her studies explains:

“I'm really grateful for the team here; they've been very supportive and have been patient with me as I am autistic, allowing me to take time when I need to. The amount of places that I've been and I learn and talk to people through this role, it has just expanded me so much more. I'm so glad.”

Pam hadn’t been outside for nearly five years until our nurses helped her into the hospice garden.

Within minutes, she was feeling fresh air again, surrounded by her children.
“It was incredible,” her daughter Jo said. “They gave Mum her dignity back.”

If you follow St Helena Hospice, you already know how much moments like this matter. What you might not know is that Your Hospice Lottery helps make this care possible every day. 🧡

This June, our Summer Super Draw is a simple way to support local families and be in with a chance to win £10,000.

Sophie is our New Goods Coordinator in the retail team. She started her St Helena Hospice career as a volunteer in the Great Clacton shop sorting donations and working on the till.

After volunteering for around 10 months, she successfully applied for an assistant manager position at the shop, and after another 18 months, progressed to her first shop manager role. Sophie developed her skills while volunteering and gained confidence in dealing with day-to-day interactions with customers.

We are extremely grateful to everyone who volunteers for St Helena Hospice. We have over 900 volunteers who all give up their time to support us in across the organisation, with over 650 of them working in our shops.

Our volunteers are so important to us because without them we simply couldn't provide our care to those that need us most.

There is something for everyone no matter your skills or experience. Sarah, Stuart and Amalaketu reflect on what they have gained through volunteering with us.

Did you know that puzzles need to be completed before they can be sold in our shops?

Rosina volunteers as a puzzle sorter. She completes donated puzzles of all shapes and sizes to make sure all the correct pieces are included before they go on the shelves of our shops.

She is our oldest volunteer at aged 98, and became a volunteer after she and her daughter started buying puzzles every week in our Dedham shop.

“I enjoy it very much. It's been a pleasure, a very great pleasure. I like doing most puzzles as long as it's busy and not too many trees, not too much sky or sea. Things that are pretty active, plenty of action going on, I think that's the best way to describe it. Yes, don't mind a few animals, dogs and rabbits. I like them busy”

We have over 900 volunteers who give up their own time to work across all areas of the organisation. Our volunteers are at the heart of what we do, and we couldn’t do it without them!

Here’s what volunteers, Sarah, Stuart and Amalaketu had to say about what surprised them most when volunteering with St Helena Hospice.
