Everyone seems to be talking about nervous system regulation at the moment - but why?

The Global Wellness Summit identified “The Rise of Neurowellness” as one of its key wellness trends for 2026, describing nervous system regulation as “the next frontier of human health.” It’s easy to see why the conversation is growing – modern life can be relentless.

The summit described the emerging focus on neurowellness as being about ‘regulation, recovery and resilience’, not simply trying to eliminate stress.

Bowen is a gentle, hands-on therapy, and not about forcing the body to change or trying to “fix” everything at once. Instead, it provides a quiet space where you can slow down, become more aware of your body and allow your system some time away from the constant demands of everyday life.

As we move away from the idea that wellbeing is always about doing more, achieving more and optimising more, Bowen complements the move towards greater awareness, and more time to pause and recover.

If you'd like to find out more about Bowen Therapy and how a session might fit into your own approach to wellbeing, feel free to get in touch.

It’s always encouraging to see Bowen being discussed in professional healthcare settings. A recent article published in Rehabilitation Nursing, the official journal of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses, looked at “Bowenwork: A Clinical Application to Reduce Pain.”

The authors explore Bowen as a gentle, non-invasive soft-tissue approach that may have a role within rehabilitation and pain management. Their review and clinical case study suggest potential benefits, particularly for people experiencing chronic or disabling conditions.

Seeing Bowen being considered as part of the wider conversation around non-pharmacological approaches to pain and rehab is a fabulous, and a great reminder for us practitioners that the conversation is constantly evolving.

This is your reminder that you don't have to be in pain to take care of your body.

We can all be guilty of:
- Waiting until a stiff neck becomes a painful neck.
- Waiting until a niggle becomes a bigger problem.
- Waiting until we're completely exhausted before we finally slow down.

Looking after yourself doesn't have to start when something is wrong, and treatment can be much faster and more effective if we can learn to recognise problems as they arise.

Bowen Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive approach that some people use as part of their wider wellbeing routine. So rather than waiting until your body is shouting at you, why not take steps now to keep mobile and pain-free through the autumn.

How much time are you spending looking down? Where are your shoulders right now? Are they relaxed? Or are they creeping up towards your ears?

Between phones, laptops, tablets and scrolling through social media, many of us spend a surprising amount of time with our head tilted forward and our shoulders rounded.

Over time, this can contribute to feelings of tension and stiffness around the neck, shoulders and upper back.

Try the following:
✨ Drop your shoulders away from your ears.
✨ Unclench your jaw.
✨ Take a slow, deep breath.
✨ Look up from your screen and give your eyes a break.

Try to do this several times a day after periods of looking at your phone, or typing at a laptop.

If you feel you need a helping hand getting your shoulders to relax and drop then do get in touch – I have appointments available throughout September at my clinics in Crieff and Oban.

Have you noticed how your breathing changes when you're stressed or relaxed?

Sitting beneath your lungs, the diaphragm is your main breathing muscle and works closely with your core and nervous system. When we're stressed or tense, our breathing can change, often becoming shallower without us even noticing.

Bowen therapy uses gentle, precise movements that can encourage the diaphragm to relax. During a session, some people notice their breathing naturally becoming slower and deeper as they settle.

Your diaphragm actually does much more than simply help you breathe – it also helps manage pressure within your body when you cough, laugh, lift or move.

If you are wondering whether Bowen might be for you, here are some fun facts to help you decide:

1. You stay fully clothed
Unlike many massage treatments, there’s no need to undress. Bowen is generally performed through light, comfortable clothing, making it a great option if you prefer a more covered-up approach to hands-on therapy.

2. It uses very gentle movements
Bowen involves a series of precise, gentle rolling moves over muscles and fascia. It’s not about deep pressure or working through painful knots, and doesn’t involve the ‘clunk-click’ associated with practices like osteopathy.

3. Less can be more
A Bowen session often includes pauses between sets of movements. These breaks give you time to relax and allow your body to respond before the practitioner continues.

4. Sessions can be surprisingly relaxing
Although the movements themselves are subtle, many people describe feeling deeply relaxed during or after a session. Some even find they become very sleepy!

5. Bowen has an interesting history
The technique was developed in Australia by Tom Bowen, who developed his own distinctive approach to hands-on therapy in the mid-20th century. It has since spread internationally and is now practised in many countries.

5 things people often turn to Bowen for:

1. Feeling stressed or tense:
Bowen can help the body and mind to relax and re-set.

2. Muscle tension:
Many people experiencing everyday muscular tension, stiffness or pain find that Bowen can be of great benefit, especially in the back, neck and shoulder area.

3. Supporting better sleep:
Allowing the body to relax during a Bowen session can have a positive effect on sleep for those struggling to switch off at night, or stay asleep.

4. Preventing some sports injuries:
While many injuries are unavoidable, regular sessions to keep the body in balance can be helpful in preventing some injuries occurring.

5. Joint pain:
Bowen can help with some musculo-skeletal issues causing joint pain.

There is a growing conversation currently around somatic wellbeing, the idea of paying closer attention to what we experience in our bodies, rather than treating stress and wellbeing as something that exists only in our minds.

It’s surprisingly easy to become disconnected from those signals which can include:

- Tight shoulders
- A clenched jaw
- Shallow breathing
- Feeling restless while resting
- That sense that you’re tired, but somehow still “switched on”

These are all useful reminders to pause and check in with ourselves.

This is one reason I love the simplicity of Bowen Therapy. A treatment provides an opportunity to slow down and give your body some uninterrupted attention.

We are often naturally more active over the summer months, and it’s a popular time of year to take up a new sport, or re-start an old one. For more energetic activities it’s completely normal to feel your body has worked hard afterwards, but sometimes aches and niggles can linger longer than expected.

You might notice:
- Tight calves after running
- A stiff neck or shoulders after cycling
- A sore lower back after golf
- Tight hips or elbows after racket sports

Our bodies are remarkably good at adapting, but they also benefit from time to recover. Alongside good training, hydration, sleep and appropriate rest, paying attention to how your body feels can help you stay active and enjoy the activities you love.

Many people find that a Bowen session helps them feel more comfortable and move more freely and that it supports their overall recovery between activities, so do get in touch if you feel you would benefit from an appointment.

Many of us will be embarking on long car journeys over the summer holidays, which can leave your body feeling out of sorts when you arrive.

You might notice:
- Tight shoulders or neck
- A stiff lower back
- Hip pain
- Legs that feel heavy or cramped

These can all help:
✔️ Take regular breaks if you can and have a gentle walk.
✔️ Roll your shoulders and move your neck comfortably.
✔️ Stretch your legs before setting off again.
✔️ Stay hydrated, especially in warm weather.

If you notice a pattern where the same areas are uncomfortable after every journey, it may be worth exploring what's contributing to that. Do make an appointment in either my Crieff or Oban clinics, and we can to see whether there is an underlying physical imbalance that might need addressing.
