🍂 Making space for what matters.

As the days grow shorter and we head towards the end of another year, perhaps it's time to pause and ask ourselves a few questions.

What is taking up most of your time and energy?
Is it what matters most to you?
And what might you like to make a little more room for?

Over the next few weeks, let's explore how small, intentional changes can help us live a life that feels more fulfilling.

Looking Back… Looking Forward 📚

Two months ago, I decided it was time to stop letting all those wellbeing books gathering dust on my bookshelf make me feel guilty! 😂

So I set myself a little challenge - to dip into some of them and share a few ideas that caught my attention.

And, if I'm being completely honest… I didn't actually read every book from cover to cover! Perhaps I was a little over-ambitious with my challenge! 😄

But I discovered something along the way: sometimes you don't need to read an entire book for one idea to make you stop and think.

Over these two months, I've been reminded to:

✨ Let go of what I can't control
✨ Build tiny habits
✨ Protect healthy boundaries
✨ Look for joy
✨ Be kinder to myself
✨ Keep learning and growing – whatever stage of life I'm in

And perhaps that's been my biggest takeaway: we're never too old to learn something new - or to be reminded of something we already knew.

Thanks for joining me on my little reading adventure.

Now it's your turn…

📚 What's one wellbeing book that has stayed with you long after you finished reading it?

I'd love to add a few more to my “one day I'll read that” pile! 😂

📖 What if your body remembers things your mind has forgotten?

And so we come to the final book in my two-month wellbeing book series - a few ideas and lessons picked from some of the wellbeing books that have been sitting on my shelf for far too long! 😂

And this one is really challenging.

'The Body Keeps the Score' Bessel van der Kolk

It explores something many of us don't fully appreciate - just how deeply our minds and bodies are connected.

Our experiences shape us.

Sometimes in obvious ways.

Sometimes in ways we don't even recognise.

Not everyone has experienced significant trauma, of course. But we all carry memories, disappointments, relationships and life experiences that can influence how we think, feel and respond today.

What I found encouraging is that understanding ourselves isn't about looking backwards forever.

It's about being able to move forwards with greater compassion, wisdom and hope.

We are never simply the sum of what has happened to us.

💬 So, as we come to the end of this little book journey, here's my question for you:

What's one thing life has taught you that has made you stronger or wiser?

I'd love to hear from you.

Have you ever noticed how quickly one small mistake can turn into a whole conversation in your head?

I've been reflecting this week on the voice we hear more than any other - our own.

That little voice in our heads can be wonderfully encouraging - or incredibly critical.

One mistake can become “I'm useless at this.”

One difficult day can become “I should be coping better.”

One decision we regret can become “Why did I do that?”

So here's today's gentle reminder.

Notice your inner dialogue.

And if it becomes harsh...

Pause.

Take a breath.

Choose kinder words.

You deserve those too.

💬 What's one encouraging thing you could say to yourself today?

💭 Would you speak to a friend the way you sometimes speak to yourself?

📖 This week's reading has been a gentle reminder to be kinder to ourselves...

If you're anything like me, you're probably much better at encouraging other people than encouraging yourself.

We often carry around a very critical inner voice.

We replay mistakes.

Question our decisions.

Expect ourselves to cope with everything perfectly.

It's Not Your Fault by Alex Howard reminds me how important self-compassion really is.

Being compassionate towards ourselves doesn't mean making excuses.

It means recognising that we're human.

We're all learning.

We're all carrying experiences that have shaped us.

And every one of us deserves the same kindness we so freely offer to others.

💬 So tell me - if you spoke to yourself today as you would to a close friend, what might you say?

🌱 What if progress was enough?

One of the things I love about reading different authors is discovering how often they agree.

Whether it's habits, wellbeing or happiness, very few experts suggest we need to change everything overnight.

Instead...

Tiny improvements.
Gentle consistency.
A little grace when we get it wrong.

Perhaps we've made personal growth much harder than it needs to be.

Maybe today doesn't have to be perfect.
Maybe it just needs to be a tiny bit better than yesterday.

📖 What if you don't need more willpower… you just need to change your environment?

As part of my September & October Wellbeing Book Challenge, I'm sharing a different book each week - books that have made me think differently about our wellbeing and the small changes we can make in everyday life.

This week's book is The Habit Mechanic by Dr Jon Finn - and it has challenged one of the biggest myths about willpower.

When we don't keep a new habit, we often tell ourselves we just need to "try harder."

But what if willpower isn't actually the problem?

Dr Jon Finn explores how our habits are shaped by routines, cues and the environments we create around us.

That means lasting change isn't just about determination.

Sometimes it's about making the healthy choice the easy choice.

👟 Leaving your walking shoes by the door.

🍎 Putting fruit where you'll see it.

📱 Keeping your phone out of the bedroom.

And I've actually tried that last one myself.

A few months ago, I bought an alarm clock so I could leave my mobile outside the bedroom.

No more little beeps and notifications disturbing my sleep and no temptation to scroll when I should be putting my head on the pillow!

It's a very small change, but it's made a surprisingly big difference.

That's what I love about this idea. We don't always need to change ourselves, sometimes we just need to change what we're surrounded by.

💬 What's one small change you could make to your environment this week that would help support a healthier habit?

Looking for the Good

As I've continued reading this week, I've been reminded that our minds naturally notice what's wrong.

It's part of being human.

We remember criticism more than compliments.
Problems more than progress.
Worries more than blessings.

That's why it's so important to intentionally notice what's going well too.

Not because we're pretending life is perfect.

But because we're training our minds to see the whole picture.

One simple question to ask ourselves before we jump into bed:
"What has gone well today?"

It's amazing how often the answer is something small, but deeply meaningful.

💬 Before today ends, what's one good thing you'll choose to remember?

📖 One idea that made me smile this week...

This week I've been checking out Make Life Happier by Dr Mark Williamson.

One of the things I appreciate most is that happiness isn't presented as something we chase or achieve. Instead, it's something we can nurture through the way we choose to live each day.

We often think happiness arrives when life is perfect.

"When I'm less busy..."
"When I have more money..."
"When the children are settled..."
"When I retire..."

But perhaps happiness isn't waiting for us in the future.

Perhaps it's already here, hidden in the ordinary moments we sometimes rush past.

A walk in the sunshine.
A good conversation.
Fresh coffee.
Music that lifts our spirits.
A grandchild's laugh.
The satisfaction of helping someone else.

The older I get, the more I realise that joy often lives in the little things.

💬 What simple moment has brought you happiness this week?

September Reflections

As I look back over last month's reading, a pattern has begun to emerge.

Whether it's letting go of control...
Building tiny habits...
Learning to rest...
Or setting healthy boundaries...

None of these ideas is really about changing other people.
They're about changing the way WE respond to life.

That feels encouraging to me because it's something each of us can begin today.

Thank you for coming on this reading journey with me throughout September. I've loved reflecting on these books, and I'm looking forward to discovering what October’s reading has to teach us.

💬 Which idea from this month's posts has stayed with you the most?
