FRIDAY FACT
When should you worry about a head bump?

Most bumps to the head are minor, but some symptoms mean you should seek urgent medical help.

After a head injury, watch for any of the following:
Vomiting
unusual sleepiness (so its not their usual naptime)
difficulty waking
confusion
a seizure
loss of consciousness
worsening headache
the bump goes in the way
the bump looks like it has fluid in or is really big
changes in behaviour

Trust your instincts too.
If your little one just doesn't seem right after a head bump, pop to your local kids hospital and get them checked out.

For a serious injury or if they're very unwell, call 999

A bump can look small on the outside, it's the symptoms afterwards that matter.

Hope you found this useful, this is one of the many topics covered on my paediatric first aid courses and you can book on or find out more info here

FRIDAY FACT

Did you know that a stroke can happen to anyone, at any age?

We often think of stroke as something that only happens to older people, but that isn't the case.

In the new updates to first aid that have been implemented this year into the training courses they have stressed how important it is to get the person to hospital quickly.

The key is recognising the signs. Remember FAST:

👤 F – Face weakness
💪 A – Arm weakness
🗣️ S – Speech problems
⏰ T – Time to call 999

Don't wait to see if it gets better. Every minute matters.

Do you know where your nearest Defibrillator is?

I wish I could tell you one site where they all are but they are often registered through different schemes.

Better than looking something up however is visually clocking it in real life.

Take a walk around your area or a drive and start trying to spot them. You can eve take a pic and then look up on youtube etc how to use that particular make/model.

Defib's increase the chance of survival from about 25% up to 60-80% when CPR is needed so it's well worth taking a moment to find your nearest. Some are in cases on the wall others just hang in a bag. All have signage though with the letters AED ad the symbol of a heart with a lightening bolt through it.

Once you start spotting you'll start to see them everywhere!
Here's some from around Scotland and even from one from our recent trip to Sardinia!

Happy spotting 👀

It's often NOT a lack of knowledge that stops us helping in an emergency... it's a lack of confidence.

A baby first aid course won't stop accidents from happening, but it will give you the confidence to stay calm and know what to do when your little one needs you most.

There are also other little things you can do to build your confidence, follow a first aid person on social media so you see the odd top tip or post.
Pop a not in your diary to take an online free quiz or test - both red cross and st andrews have great online resources.
Read your book from your first aid course and repeat a fact to someone else, phone and tell your mum of 1 thing that has changed or something that you didnt know, and in saying that out loud it plants in it your brain so if you ever need it you will remember it!

Because confidence can make all the difference.
