Imagine a clenched fist 👊

If someone asked you to relax your hand, you wouldn’t force the fingers open. The harder you push, the more resistance you’re likely to create.

Instead, the hand relaxes when the nervous system decides it no longer needs to stay tense.
This is a useful way to think about massage.

Many of us have been told that tight muscles need to be broken up, knots need to be worked out, or that treatment needs to hurt to be effective.

But our bodies are far more complex than that.

When massage helps, it’s unlikely because we’re physically forcing tissues to change. Instead, we’re providing an experience that can help the nervous system feel safe, reduce muscle guarding, ease discomfort, and encourage relaxation.

That doesn’t mean pressure doesn’t matter.

Some people love a firm massage. Others prefer a lighter touch. Neither is right or wrong.

The goal isn’t to use as much pressure as possible. The goal is to find the right approach for you.

The best massage is often a collaborative process between therapist and client, where we listen, adapt, and work together to find what feels most meaningful and helpful in your body.

Your body isn’t a machine that needs fixing.

It’s a living, adaptable ecosystem that benefits from support rather than force.

23/06/2026

Questions I get asked all the time as a massage therapist…

“Can you feel where I’m out of alignment?”
“Can you tell if there’s anything wrong?”
“Do I need an adjustment?”
“Do I have any knots?”

The truth is, we need to stop asking other people how our body feels and start becoming more connected to our own experience.

As massage therapists, we can’t feel what you feel.

Your experience of your body is far more meaningful than what we think we can feel with our hands. What a therapist feels and what a client experiences often don’t correlate particularly well.

Your body isn’t a machine that needs fixing.

It’s a resilient, adaptable ecosystem influenced by sleep, stress, movement, emotions, health and so much more.

Massage isn’t about fixing you or changing your structure.

It’s about creating a space where you can slow down, feel safe, let your guard down and reconnect with yourself.

Because sometimes reducing stress, feeling cared for and taking time for yourself can be the turning point.

Stop searching for quick fixes.

Start investing in your self-care.

The person who knows the most about how your body feels isn’t your massage therapist, It’s you.

Massage is not a luxury.

It’s often seen as an occasional treat or something we only book when we’re feeling particularly tense, stressed, or overwhelmed. But we believe massage can be so much more than that.

One of the challenges within the massage industry is that there are still many outdated ideas and myths being shared. Because there are aspects of massage that we don’t fully understand, different therapists can sometimes fill those gaps with explanations that aren’t supported by current evidence. This has led to a huge variation in the stories and narratives surrounding massage.

At Barefoot Physio, we take an evidence-based approach. That means we stay up to date with the latest research and are transparent about what massage can and can’t do.

Massage isn’t “breaking down knots”, “flushing out toxins” or “realigning” your body.

What it can do is provide a valuable opportunity to slow down, reconnect with yourself, reduce stress, ease muscle soreness, improve your sense of wellbeing, and support recovery. For many people, it’s an important part of their self-care toolkit.

We’re passionate about changing perceptions around massage and helping people see it as a proactive way to look after themselves rather than a reactive fix when things have already become too much.

When we make time to fill our own cup, we increase our capacity and resilience. We often cope better with life’s challenges, show up more fully for our families, friends and colleagues, and have more energy to invest in the things that matter most to us.

Self-care isn’t selfish.
And massage isn’t a luxury.

It’s one of many ways we can invest in our wellbeing.

“I was suffering from considerable discomfort on long rides. After the bike fit session I have been transformed and can now ride pain free.”

At Barefoot Physio, our bike fit service is about much more than adjusting your bike. We assess your mobility, strength, movement patterns and riding position to help you ride more comfortably, efficiently and with less risk of injury.

Whether you’re training for an event, commuting, or simply want to enjoy longer rides without discomfort, we’re here to help.

A huge thank you to Zac for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review and for trusting us with your cycling journey.
