Mind survey finds NHS mental health staff at breaking point. 65% of respondents said they had suffered burnout or emotional exhaustion. Key challenges people reported include inadequate staffing levels and high caseloads of people with more complex mental health needs.

We must support NHS professionals to deliver high-quality and timely mental health care. 49% said working conditions had impacted their ability to always deliver a compassionate approach. More proof our current mental health system is not able to cope with the level of demand for support it is facing.

Behind these statistics are dedicated mental health professionals trying to prop up an unsustainable system. Same-day open access mental health support would mean people get the help they need sooner, relieving the pressure on NHS services and professionals.

This is devastating but it doesn’t have to be this way.
Mental health professionals need to be supported to stay well and deliver great care. The UK government have the power to address these issues in the upcoming mental health strategy.

Services must have the right number of staff in the right roles, with the right values, knowledge and skills. But we also need to rethink how people access support, to relieve the pressure on NHS services.

Great mental health care is centred on people. Mind is calling for same-day open access, so people are heard and helped earlier. This can prevent them from becoming more unwell while they wait, and needing more intensive support.

Invite your local MP to our parliamentary event where we can walk through how the mental health system can be fixed: https://campaigns.mind.org.uk/page/198858/action/1?ea.tracking.id=lio&utm_content=SeeMeNow_EmailMP_ActiveConsent_1&utm_campaign=open-access&utm_medium=social&utm_source=linkedin

Further to the closure of Barnstaple's Maternity Unit, we have now managed to get hold of the risk assessment for this.

I know a number of you have been asking about what was behind the decision to close; here is the document behind this decision:

Here is a Q&A with Angela and David regarding the closure of Barnstaple's Maternity Unit.

It has some useful information and reassurances - particularly about emergency departments and ambulance services.

If you’ve ever wondered what we mean when we talk about perinatal mental health, this is worth a watch.

*Louis Theroux’s Mothers on the Edge* follows women experiencing some of the most serious mental health difficulties around pregnancy and after having a baby.

It’s a hard watch in places, but an important one. And a reminder that becoming a mum doesn’t always look or feel the way we’re told it should.

This is why early support, somewhere safe to talk, and simply not having to pretend you’re fine matters so much. 💜

Louis Theroux visits specialist psychiatric units which treat mothers experiencing serious mental illness whilst allowing them to live alongside their babies.
