📉 FIRST STEPS ON MANAGING PAIN/INJURY📈

Developing pain or getting an injury can be scary😕

What do you do? First thought is panic…

It doesn’t need to be that scary, and the first 24-72 hours are important.

So here’s what we suggest💪🏼

✅ Don’t push through…😵

Seems simple enough but you’ll be surprised! Avoid things that make your pain sore, where possible, and stick with things that don’t feel as bad.

Usually people avoid everything! We want to keep moving where we can👌🏼

✅ Prioritise sleep 💤

It’s sometimes hard depending on the pain, but better sleep can have positive affects on pain👏🏼

Again, it’s hard, so where possible use pillows and props to help position yourself in a less painful spot🫣

✅ Don’t rush for anti-inflammatories 💊

It’s a common thought to reach for them but the first stage of healing is the inflammatory response, and meds can interfere or stunt that repair process🥲

Paracetamol is a better option for pain relief initially if you can take that 👍🏼

✅ When you can, get assessed!🧐

Earlier assessment gains an accurate diagnosis and a more specific recovery plan which reduces the chance for compensations to creep in 👏🏼

We can also tap into some pain relieving treatments as best suited to you🙌🏼

🫣MY INJURY HOT TAKE…🫣

I’m sure a few people will feel called out by this🤣👀

If I see another gym goer, runner, hyroxer or crossfitter wondering why they’re constantly injured or getting niggles, but they train 7 days a week at 110% intensity all the time…🫠

And to make matters worse…they don’t see an issue with it🫣

Something must be wrong🤷‍♂️ they’re strong - they go to the gym, right?

The issue isn’t with the training, it’s how well you are RECOVERING💆🏼‍♂️😴🍽️

And I don’t mean theraguns and ice baths (which have their place…)

Take a rest day? If you train 5-7 days a week, don’t put your more intense sessions 3 days on the trot?

Listen to your body?🤔

Your body NEEDS to recover to perform, and if you’re not giving it a chance, the risk of overloading it grows ten fold😬

And if you’re not recovering from intense sessions, your body starts utilising its backup energy storage which it can only do for so long🤷‍♂️

It’s sometimes a bitter pill to swallow, but what’s better? Training intermittently because of constant niggles, or continually training smarter for longer?🧐💭

You’re not broken, you’re fatigued😢

💪 IS STRENGTH ENOUGH? 💪

“You can’t go wrong with getting strong”

It’s not 100% wrong…

Personally, it doesn’t acknowledge the full picture🤷🏻‍♀️

If you’re a cup, and your cup is your ability to tolerate whatever you ask of it (your capacity)…

The water filling your cup is the volume of your activity…

And the tap producing the water is the demands of your activity😅

Building strength only increases the size of your cup, meaning you can tolerate more (you get stronger)…simple right?

Things like control and managing intensity are absolutely massive in making sure your cup doesn’t overflow…and leading to you getting injured🤦🏼‍♂️

If you’re strong, but have poor mechanics, and you’re training like a mad man (or woman!)…your cup is bound to overflow at some point right?

Strength might delay the inevitable, as it’ll just take longer to overflow…but it’s still going to happen!🫣

Building control and managing intensity are key for controlling the flow of the water into your cup whilst you build a bigger cup👌🏼

So maybe time to rethink the “can’t go wrong with getting strong” a little bit…
