Through our work alongside children and their parents and carers, we are always searching for resources that can support families, giving them practical tools to use both during and long after their time working with us.

Nine months ago, Amy noticed that although there were many wonderful childrenโ€™s books available, there seemed to be a gap for a story that could help children and adults explore feelings, connection and co-regulation together.

So, she decided to create one. ๐Ÿ“–๐ŸŒฟ

Since then, Amy has been working incredibly hard behind the scenes to bring this idea to life. Last month, a publisher offered to publish her book, and now the manuscript is being prepared for print while the beautiful illustrations are being created to bring the story to life!

Weโ€™re so excited to share these first few exciting stepโ€™s with you. Keep an eye out for more updates as this very special story begins its journey into the world! ๐Ÿ’š

Starting secondary school brings lots of excitement, but it can also come with worries, uncertainty and new challenges. Whatever you are feeling today, remember that you are doing an incredible job. Be proud of how far you have already come, take each moment one step at a time and give yourself time to settle into your new surroundings.

Working alongside parents and carers is such an important part of our transition support because your encouragement, reassurance and understanding make a genuine difference.

We are wishing every child, parent and carer a happy and positive start to this exciting new chapter.

Going back is not simply a return to lessons. It can mean adjusting to a new teacher, classroom, timetable, friendships, sensory environment and expectations, all at once.

During the first few weeks, you may notice:

๐Ÿ’š Increased anxiety or repeated questions
๐Ÿ’š Sleep difficulties or physical complaints
๐Ÿ’š Greater sensory sensitivity
๐Ÿ’š Meltdowns or shutdowns after school
๐Ÿ’š Irritability or a stronger need for control
๐Ÿ’š Masking at school followed by exhaustion at home
๐Ÿ’š Changes in eating, toileting or self-care
๐Ÿ’š Reluctance or distress around attending school

These are not necessarily signs that a child is being difficult. They may show that their nervous system is working incredibly hard to manage the demands of the school day.

Visual timetables, predictable routines, quieter arrivals, transition warnings, sensory breaks and additional recovery time can all help.

Support should begin before a child becomes overwhelmed. Remember, a child who appears settled at school may release everything when they reach the safety of home.

Starting school or moving into a new class can feel overwhelming. A Worry Jar gives children a gentle way to share feelings at their own pace.

All you need is:

๐Ÿ’š A clean jam jar
๐Ÿ’š Stickers or pens
๐Ÿ’š Small pieces of paper

Invite your child to decorate the jar, then write or draw their worries and place them inside.

Choose a quiet time to open the jar together. Listen with curiosity, validate each worry and explore what might help.

๐…๐จ๐ซ ๐ž๐ฑ๐š๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž:

โ€œI understand why making friends feels worrying. I wonder if other children feel the same. How could we show someone we would like to be their friend?โ€

You could practise smiling, saying hello or asking, โ€œWould you like to play?โ€

The aim is not to remove every worry. It is to show your child that their feelings make sense and they do not have to manage them alone. ๐Ÿ’š

Co-regulation is the supportive process where a calm, trusted adult helps a child or young person manage and understand their emotions. Before children can fully self-regulate, they often need someone alongside them to model calmness, empathy, and emotional safety.

By staying present, listening without judgement, and responding with patience, we help children feel understood and secure. This not only reduces stress in the moment but also builds the skills they need to manage emotions independently in the future.

๐Ÿ’ก Co-regulation isnโ€™t about controlling behaviour, itโ€™s about creating connection, understanding whatโ€™s behind the behaviour, and helping young people feel safe enough to learn healthier ways to cope. ๐Ÿ’ก

For quite some time, Amy has been quietly working on a project that is incredibly close to her heart.

It brings together her experience of supporting children and families, her belief in the importance of emotional connection, and a little imagination and magic too.

It has been created to help children explore feelings that are not always easy to understand or put into words, and to give the adults supporting them a gentle way to begin those important conversations.
