The 2026 winter vaccination programme is now underway, offering protection to those most at risk from flu as we head into the colder months.
Invites and clinic settings for those people only having flu vaccine will be as follows:
🔵Adults registered with Lerwick, Levenwick, Scalloway, Brae, Bixter and Walls practices, aged 65-74 or under 65 with eligible medical conditions, will have been sent a text, email or letter inviting them to book an appointment at the Grantfield Vaccination Centre for their flu vaccine.
🔵If you are registered with Hillswick, Unst, Whalsay or Yell practices, you will be contacted directly by your GP practice about your vaccinations. However, you can attend the Grantfield Vaccination Centre if you prefer.
🔵School pupils should have already received their consent packs for their flu vaccinations delivered in school.
🔵All pre-school children under five will be invited to get their flu vaccine at nursery or GP practice.
🔵 and social care staff will receive information through their workplace regarding flu vaccination clinics.
🔵Pregnant women will be offered the flu vaccine by their midwife.
🔵People who cannot leave their home, will receive their vaccine at home from the NHS Shetland Vaccination Team, Community Nursing Team or Scottish Ambulance Service.
🔵All other people eligible for flu vaccine should look out for further information, as you may not receive a personal invite. You can book a flu appointment using the national portal, or contact the Shetland Vaccination Team (or Hillswick, Unst, Whalsay or Yell practice if you are registered with one of them).

It's and the theme is "Let's Connect", so we're shining a light on how NHS Shetland and Shetland Women's Aid work together to connect women to the services they need.

If you are being subjected to control, we know it can be incredibly difficult to contact us. Your appointment at the Sexual Health Clinic might be one of the only opportunities to be alone with a professional - and that's why we have our monthly drop-in.

As part of your appointment at the clinic, your sexual health practitioner will let you know that Shetland Women's Aid are present, and give you the opportunity to speak to one of our domestic abuse specialists in another room. You can also indicate that you would like to see us on the intake form you are given to complete at reception when you arrive at the Sexual Health Clinic.

All enquires will be handled discreetly and confidentially. You can speak to us about your own circumstances, or if you are worried about someone else. We are here to listen and support you.

NHS Shetland Walk-In Clinic to return to Grantfield

NHS Shetland is pleased to advise patients that, following completion of improvement works, the Walk-In Clinic will return to Grantfield from Tuesday 22 September.

The works at Grantfield have included the addition of a new toilet, an extra clinic room and a number of other improvements designed to enhance the experience for patients using the service.

Before the move back to Grantfield, the clinic will continue to operate from its temporary location at Outpatients at the Gilbert Bain Hospital with the following opening times:

• Friday 18 September: 5pm to 8pm (please do not arrive before 5pm)
• Saturday 19 September: 9am to 5pm
• Sunday 20 September: 9am to 5pm
• Monday 21 September: Closed

As the pilot service continues to develop, opening days and times may occasionally vary. Patients are encouraged to check the NHS Shetland website and social media channels for the latest information and service updates.

The Shetland Recovery Hub have their annual 'Recovery Walk' this Saturday at 2pm. This walk is open to everyone and celebrates those going through recovery of drug use. Meet at The Recovery Hub at Pitt Lane in Lerwick for 2pm start. 🚶‍♀️‍➡️💜

The 2026 winter vaccination programme is now underway, offering protection to those most at risk from flu and coronavirus (COVID-19) as we head into the colder months. By helping to prevent serious illness, hospitalisation and death, the programme plays an important role in keeping individuals, families and communities well, while also reducing pressure on NHS and social care services during winter. The flu vaccination programme starts on 22 September, with coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine available from mid-October, and we aim to complete the winter programme before Christmas.

New Vacancy – Patient Flow Manager

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Patient Flow Manager within the Gilbert Bain Hospital.

We are looking for an enthusiastic person with excellent communication and leadership skills to join our management team.

You will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of planned clinical services in Shetland and through shared pathways with NHS Grampian, helping to deliver service improvement, and working with clinical and support services to deliver local and visiting services in line with national targets.

Walk-In Clinic open 5pm - 8pm in the Outpatients Department at Gilbert Bain Hospital

The Walk-In Clinic will be open from 5pm - 8pm, Monday 14 September until Friday 18 September. Please do not arrive before 5pm.

You may have to wait to be seen, depending on how busy the clinic is. The Walk-In Clinic operates as a drop-in service rather than an appointment system, and waiting times can be up to an hour.

Repeat prescriptions should be requested from your usual GP practice. If patients have run out of medication, they should speak to their local pharmacy about an emergency supply.
