TRIGGER WARNING: Safeguarding

As our freelance sprint races on, this week's discussion focuses on safeguarding, including defining what safeguarding really is, how it affects us as therapists, and ensuring we feel confident managing challenging situations. Safeguarding is a huge and sometimes difficult topic, but it is vital for ensuring safe and effective working practice. If you feel you need more knowledge in this area, great resources are available online including training programmes and template safeguarding documents.

As our Freelance Sprint continues into its second week, this weeks prompts get participants to step into the world of the consumer as well as consider how our personal ethics as therapists influence how we interact with our service users.

📚BOOK RECOMMENDATION📚

For August, we are recommending Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks. Oliver Sacks was a renowned neuroligist who wrote other top selling books such as The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, and in Musicophilia he explores how our neurology impacts the way we hear, process, and interact with music. Through sensitive and in depth exploration of real life patients, Oliver Sacks demonstrates the power of music and why the human brain is so sensitive to and influenced by sounds around us 📚🎶

🎶📚This week marked the beginning of Clap & Toot's Freelance Sprint, a series of 5 live online workshops that help freelance music therapists get their private practice ready for the new academic year ahead. Each week, participants are guided through a topic and given some prompts to help them consider what they would like their practice to look like and how to achieve that.

Week 1 starts of with some fun and creative questions that encourage therapists to think about how they want their practice to look. What would your answers be...? Let us know in the comments ⬇️

As we approach the end of another academic year here at Clap & Toot, it is a great time to pause and look back at the impact we've made by delivering music therapy sessions. The work we do is only possible with the support of the families and professionals surrounding our clients which makes receiving such positive feedback from them even more of a priviledge. 🧡

☀️While the summer holidays are often thought of as a joyful time full of play and adventure, we know for some families this sadly is not always the case. For families who have children with additional needs the summer holidays means places are more crowded, routines are disrupted, and the regular support system of school disappears. To help with this, we thought we would highlight a few provisions that are available for children and families with SEND over the summer period, and more widely promote some organisations that do fantastic work throughout the year☀️

thelearningandplayhub The Learning and Play Hub is based in Tooting and offers a range of bespoke 1-1 and group sessions that are tailored for children and young people who are neurodiverse or SEND. Sessions run both in term time and the school holidays and have a focus on meeting the child where they are to help nurture a range of skills such as communication, language, and emotional development

senunitycic Day based summer camps in Roehampton & Twickenham for children with SEND and their siblings. SEN Unity provide a range of support across the whole year and are an amazing organisation to know about.

a2ndvoicecic This organisation supports autistic people and their families across the city of London. They are offering a range of events over July and August which are tailored to children, adolescents, and young adults who are neurodiverse.

Wandsworth Local Council: There are several forms of support for families and children with SEND available through Wandsworth Council. This includes a parent/ carer support group, short break schemes, holiday activities, and much more. This can be found through the Family Information Service page on their website

1 year ago today, our service manager was featured on the 'Inner Source' podcast. Crystal used this conversation to spread awareness of music therapy, address common misconceptions, and dive into its complex nuances. 100% worth a listen no matter where you're at in your understanding of music therapy!

So where do we actually do our sessions….?

When working in schools, we understand that we are part of a bigger community that also has to factor in hundreds of other staff and students. Our capacity as music therapists to work flexibly, while still prioritising our client and providing safe therapeutic boundaries, makes music therapy more accessible to children while in school! 🎶

So where do we hold our music therapy sessions….?

Working in schools means understanding that we are part of a bigger community that also has to factor in hundreds of other staff and students. Our capacity as music therapist to be flexible about where we work while still prioritising the clients needs and having good therapeutic boundaries makes music therapy therapy more accessible to children while at school! 🎶
