Eating on or around cancer treatment days can be difficult, so a bit of planning ahead can be super handy.

Remember that nutrition doesn't have to be perfect every day. Some days will be beige. Some days will be less or more than others.

What matters most is the trend over time.

If you want to try the meals they can be great to pop in the microwave and a few minutes later you've got a nutrient dense balanced meal. Great for when you're tired or don't know what to have. Use discount code GREENLIGHTNUTRITION25 at checkout for 25% off

(I do make a bit of commission when someone uses my code, but I genuinely believe in this company for it's dietitian-designed chef-made meals with no additives)

Low appetite can make large meals feel overwhelming.

So try mini meals and protein and energy dense snacks at regular points throughout the day.

Eating doesn't need to be perfect during treatment especially on a bad day, some days getting through it is enough.

If you're struggling and not sure what to eat, or if you're losing weight unintentionally you may be best seeing a cancer specialist dietitian.

I'd love to hear what nutrition advice you've been given from someone who isn't qualified in nutrition.

Sometimes the advice is spot on, and there are doctors who are also qualified in nutrition ( is a great example!) But more often than not, your doctor has only had a few hours of nutrition training, and eating themselves or being interested in nutrition isn't the same as a dietitians degree!

For nutrition advice that is personalised to you and your medical condition that is exactly where a dietitian comes in. We work with your medical team to support you.

What's your thoughts on this 🤔

Smoothie time! 🫐

I get asked all the time whether smoothies are ok to have. And the answer is yes! Smoothies, unlike juices, keep the fibre and so can be a great breakfast or snack.

To build a balanced smoothie, add nuts and seeds (and maybe even oats) which will give a great nutritional profile as well as help slow the release of naturally occurring sugars to give you steady energy.

What's your favourite smoothie recipe? I'd love to know!

This woman makes something sound credible when it comes to starving cancer. But she can't be trusted. She's not allowed to give health advice in some parts of the world because she's not qualified to. And yet people still believe her and are following her sometimes dangerous and often misleading advice.

We don't need to cut out all sugars and fruits. Sure reducing added sugars can be beneficial but it isn't going to starve cancer cells and make them self destruct.

Gut symptoms aren’t driven by one meal or one ingredient.

It's easy to believe that it's the foods fault.

So you start cutting things out to work out the trigger.

And it might help for a while, but then you find your need to cut out more.

Until you're left with a restricted diet and worse symptoms than ever (bloating, pain, constipation, diarrhoea etc)

The truth is it's not the food. Not all of it anyway.

The gut lining can become stuck in a hypersensitive state.

When we target the right place with the right strategies we get relief.

So what are the strategies?
Sorry to be annoying, but they're slightly different for everyone, because you're all so unique! Though the right types of fibre plays a role, as does the gut-brain communication.

Clients who have been through our Gut Reset package report not only symptom relief, but also less fear around food, and the freedom to eat out again knowing that you're in charge of your gut and not the other way around.

If you'd like to get on top of your symptoms once and for all, get in touch DM or comment RESET, or the link in the bio has the details you need.

Sugar and cancer. The complicated relationship and the never ending fear of food.

You don't need a nutrition degree to know that a high sugar diet isn't optimal for health.

But food is energy. That's what calories are, units of energy. And food is more than energy, it's taste and textures give us pleasure, and that's important.

No one is saying we should eat a tonne of added sugar foods in the diet.

But I am giving you permission to eat something sweet if you want to. It on its own won't cause or feed cancer.

There's no reason to exclude ALL forms of sugar, as we know there's loads of evidence for the benefits of foods which also pack in fibre and micronutrients.

Have you been told by someone you should cut out sugar?

Should you try to make your body more alkaline during cancer treatment?

As a dietitian with published research in cancer nutrition, this is one of the most persistent myths I hear - so let's actually look at it.

The idea is that cancer can't survive in an alkaline environment, so eating 'alkaline' foods and avoiding 'acidic' ones will change your body's pH and make it harder for cancer to grow. Sounds plausible and influencers make it sellable.

But your blood pH is tightly controlled by your body - your lungs and kidneys regulate it within a very narrow range regardless of what you eat. If your body was too acid or alkaline you'd probably be in intensive care.

Diet doesn't change your blood pH, and trying to force that change through extreme dietary restrictions may actually be harmful.

Here's what's true though: many of the foods on 'alkaline' food lists - vegetables, fruits, wholegrains - are genuinely good for you during treatment. Not because of pH or the fact they're alkaline. It's because they're nutrient-dense, and rich in fibre.

So you can absolutely eat more of those foods - just not because you're trying to change your body's chemistry.

Anyone selling you an alkaline diet plan? They don't understand the science of biology, and are almost certainly making a profit out of your uncertainty.

Nausea with cancer treatment can make eating feel impossible some days. Here's what helps, and why.

Ginger has genuine evidence behind it for easing nausea, which is why it's such a go-to.
Ginger tea, ginger biscuits, even crystallised ginger all work.

Plain foods (crackers, plain crisps) tend to be easier to tolerate too - less aroma, less flavour intensity, gentler on a sensitive stomach.

If you're feeling sick, remember that your diet doesn't need to be perfect right now.
Some days are about getting through the symptoms, not having the best diet.
If that means simple foods, small amounts, or the same few things on repeat for a while, that's okay.
Once you're through the harder days, that's when we look at building things back up.

If nausea's making eating difficult for you and especially if you're losing weight with it and you're feeling worried, DM or comment CONSULT and our team will help you 💚
