General Naturopathic Council The aim of the General Naturopathic Council is to regulate and support naturopathic practitioners in order to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the public.

As more and more people choose natural healthcare practitioners alongside conventional medical treatments, the public and medical professions are becoming more interested in the safe practice and efficacy of complementary therapies. In conjunction with Skills for Health, the GNC has recently developed National Occupational Standards for Naturopaths. The GNC is currently discussing voluntary self-r

egulation; this is an ongoing process and the site will be updated with the latest developments and achievements.

The BSEM’s November 2026 event reflects where the field of Bioactive Lipids has arrived today. The lipid story that BSEM members were tracing clinically through dietary fatty acids, red-cell lipid analysis at the Johns Hopkins Peroxisomal Diseases Laboratory, membrane structure and function, and inflammatory disease two decades ago has converged on mechanisms that are now active frontiers in biomedical research: the specialised pro-resolving mediators, the structural and signalling roles of DHA within the brain and nervous system, the influence of membrane phospholipid composition on cellular communication and metabolic function, the consequences of lipid depletion, and the evolutionary mismatch between modern diets and our lipid biochemistry.

What once appeared to be disparate observations are increasingly being unified through advances in lipidomics, neuroscience, immunology, and systems biology. We now understand that lipids function not only as structural components and energy substrates, but also as dynamic signalling molecules that influence inflammation, immune regulation, mitochondrial function, neuroprotection, cellular resilience, and tissue repair.

These are no longer questions at the margins. They sit at the intersection of neuroscience, immunology, metabolic medicine, photobiology and clinical nutrition, and they have direct, practical implications for how we treat patients with inflammatory, neurological, metabolic, and chronic degenerative disease.

The BSEM has always been an organisation that seeks to bridge the gap between the consulting room and the research bench. This event is an opportunity to do exactly that, in the company of clinicians and scientists who share that ambition.

Acute inflammation saves lives. Chronic inflammation slowly changes them.
Chronic micro-inflammation — low-grade, persistent, and often clinically silent — is increasingly recognised not as a downstream consequence of disease, but as an upstream driver of it.

From cardiovascular disease and metabolic dysfunction to neurodegeneration, cancer, and accelerated ageing, the converging biology points to one terrain. Understanding that terrain is becoming one of the most clinically useful frameworks available to practitioners today.

The science is rapidly catching up. In 2023, chronic inflammation and dysbiosis were formally recognised as hallmarks of ageing, reflecting their central role in the ageing process. At the same time, landmark clinical trials have shown that reducing inflammation can lower cardiovascular risk independently of cholesterol, establishing residual inflammatory risk as a new and clinically actionable treatment target.
