Waking at 3am. Crashing at 3pm.

Sean calls it a running on empty pattern. Picture an engine low on oil: it runs hot and fast. In Chinese medicine, that’s called empty heat.

What it needs is time, space and stillness, but the pattern works against exactly that. You lie down, the system settles, the heat rises, your mind starts up, and you’re awake again.

Meet Andrew Osbourne, acupuncturist at E5 Acupuncture in Hackney.

Often it isn’t really about the jaw. Stress and anxiety show up in the body first, and for a lot of people that means holding tension right through the face and neck.

Hormonal shifts can feed into the same picture. It’s rarely one thing in isolation.

Most people fit treatment around work, family, and everything else. A clinic that only opens Monday to Friday, nine to five, asks patients to come when it suits the clinic rather than when it suits them.

Acupuncture is often used for ongoing conditions, which usually means returning regularly. Weekend and evening access is what makes that realistic for people who can’t take time off during the week.

Most clinics start by asking how much they can charge. E5 was built on the opposite question: what’s the least we can charge?
The answer: £38. Same price for everyone, every time.

In this video, why that number is the whole strategy. Acupuncture is often used for chronic conditions, which usually means returning for a course of treatment rather than a single visit. At £80, £150, or £300 a session, most people could manage one or two visits and no more. At £38, coming back is realistic.

The model strips out the padding and keeps what matters in the centre: the practitioner, the treatment, and the patient. The idea is simple. People should be able to come when they need to, not only when they can afford to.
