When a client gives us a call to let us know their person has died, we will come to their location to bring the person into our care. There’s nothing you need to do to prepare, and we will guide you through every step of the process, following your lead and never rushing you.

But some people may have questions about how a home collection works, or simply want to feel prepared for when that moment comes. On our blog, Aaron and Liam from the Poppy’s team explain how the process works and what you might like to bear in mind.

We cover questions like:

🧡 How does a client arrange a home collection?
🧡 How long will it take for you to come?
🧡 What about if the person has died outside of Poppy’s hours?

Decorating your person’s coffin can be a beautiful way to personalise their funeral.

The process of decorating it can also be an opportunity to spend time together as a community, share memories of your person and slow down a little during the often-busy period before the funeral.

A cardboard coffin is an environmentally kind choice. They are also more affordable and can be decorated in so many ways – as these photos kindly shared by our clients demonstrate.

There are many reasons why a client might want to arrange a funeral quickly.

This might include cultural or religious factors; because they plan to have an unattended cremation/burial and to hold a separate memorial at a later date; or because it is simply what works best for the community around the person who has died.

If you want or need to arrange a funeral at short notice, we’ve shared some information on our blog that explores what you might need to think about. Find the link in the comments below to learn more.

Poppy’s is here to support; if you want to talk to us about arranging a funeral in the next seven days, please call us on 020 3589 4726. You do not have to know every detail before speaking to us. We can help you understand what must happen first, what can happen in parallel, and which choices are most likely to affect timing.

Just before the House of Commons adjourned for summer recess last week, the Junior Health Minister published a statement on the progress made against the Government Inquiry into the issues raised by the case of mortuary abuse in Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust (also known as the Fuller Inquiry).

At Poppy’s we are pleased that the Government has reaffirmed its commitment to developing a regulatory regime for the funeral sector, although we had hoped for more concrete proposals by now.

Regulation of the funeral sector is long overdue - it is a necessary first step in raising standards of care for the dead. We provided oral evidence to the Inquiry and will continue to use our voice through every available channel to push for better standards of care for the dead across the funeral sector and beyond.

We hope momentum is kept up by the new government led by Andy Burnham, and urge the newly appointed Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Yvette Cooper and her team to continue to drive the issue forward.

“We need each other, even in our imperfect form.”

More and more people are turning to large language models like ChatGPT and custom-made chatbot services for support in moments of grief.

It can be hard to ask for help when we’re grieving. At a time when we can have so much going on in our minds and bodies, perhaps AI can feel like a safe place to share our honest feelings and ask ‘is it normal to…?’

Conversely, it can be hard to know what to say to people who are navigating a death. What if an equal number of people are turning to AI to ask ‘what to say to my friend whose mother/partner/child just died?’

Even though it can be scary, and there’s no way to get it ‘right’, advises us to try talking to each other about our grief anyway.

We all have that item of clothing or possession that instantly reminds us of our person: a wooden walking stick; a woolly hat with cat-ears sticking out; a packet of extra-strong mints. For Frank, it was his red shoes.

So it was entirely appropriate that his family placed a pair on top of his coffin at his funeral. They chose to have his coffin decorated with a beautiful photograph of a lily pond which Frank, a keen photographer, took himself. At the end of his funeral service, attendees came and placed a flower with him, on his own ‘lily pond’.

Thank you very much to Frank’s family for giving their permission to share this photo. We know how much our followers appreciate seeing the many wonderful ways that clients create funerals that are truly unique to the person whose life they are celebrating.
