What makes BSL training actually stick in the workplace?

It’s not just learning signs. It’s building confidence, shared language, and a culture where Deaf colleagues don’t have to work twice as hard to be included.

At Appa Me Ltd, our Signature-aligned BSL courses are designed for real-world communication, with experienced in-house tutors and practical, supportive teaching.

If your organisation is thinking about BSL training (or refreshing what you already do), we’re happy to talk through the best fit for your team.

Week 1 of Kyla’s 12-week blog series is live 🎉

My World as a CODA and Interpreter

Kyla shares what it’s really like living between two worlds, and how that experience shapes her work as an interpreter.

If you work with Deaf colleagues, Deaf patients, or Deaf service users, this is a powerful read and a great reminder that access is built through people, not just policies.

Accessible meetings: 5 quick wins you can implement this week:
1) Send the agenda early
2) Book interpretation in advance
3) Turn on live captions
4) Keep to one speaker at a time
5) Share notes and actions after

If you’d like, we can also help you plan interpreting cover, run BSL awareness training, and put in place the right in-work support so inclusion is consistent, not reactive.

Communication is a right. Access is equality.

New PM Andy Burnhams decision not to have a live BSL interpreter during an important government announcement highlights a barrier Deaf people still face far too often.

Providing a BSL translation online is a positive step, but it is not always enough.

True equality means Deaf BSL users can access important information at the same time as everyone else.

Live BSL interpretation is about more than communication. It is about access, inclusion, and moving towards a more equitable world.

If youre an organisation sharing critical updates, please plan for live access from the start.

Is your team member struggling at work?

They might not be the problem. They might just need the right support.

In-work disability support isn't just for people with visible disabilities. It works for anyone who needs help equalising at work:

🤝 Deaf employees needing communication support
♿ People with mobility disabilities
🧠 Neurodivergent team members
❤️ People managing health conditions
👂 Anyone else who deserves to thrive

We provide job coaching, mentoring, support workers, and more. And yes, much of it is funded.

The question isn't "Can we afford this?" It's "Can we afford not to?"

Let's talk about what your team needs.

One of the biggest myths I hear from employers: "We can't afford to support disabled employees."

Actually, you can. And the business case is strong.

In-work disability support—job coaching, mentoring, communication support—is often fully funded through Access to Work and similar schemes. Your cost? Minimal. Your gain? Significant.

What we've seen:
• Better employee retention (our clients average 5+ years)
• Higher engagement and productivity
• Reduced turnover costs
• A genuinely inclusive culture that attracts talent

Disability isn't a cost centre. It's an opportunity to build a stronger, more resilient team.

If you're an employer thinking about this, let's have a conversation. The support your team needs might already be funded.

Here's what many employers don't realise: in-work disability support is often FREE.

Access to Work grants can cover:
✓ Job coaching and mentoring
✓ Communication support workers
✓ Workplace adjustments and training
✓ Ongoing support for employees

We help navigate the funding process, manage the support, and make sure your team member gets what they need to thrive.

The result? Better retention, more engaged employees, and a genuinely inclusive workplace.

Your employee deserves to succeed. We make it happen.

Disability isn't a barrier to work. The lack of or the wrong right support is.

Our In-Work Support service helps people of any disability equalise in the workplace. Whether someone's deaf, disabled, neurodivergent, or managing a health condition, we work with them to unlock their potential at work.

The best part? Much of this support is fully funded through Access to Work and other schemes. You don't need to absorb the cost.

If you're supporting someone in employment, or you're an employer wanting to do right by your team, let's talk about what's possible.

🚫 LONDON HOSEPIPE BAN STARTS TODAY 🚫

From today, a hosepipe ban is in effect across London as we all do our part to conserve water during this dry period.

However, if you're a Blue Badge holder, you're exempt from this ban. This exemption recognises that some people rely on hosepipes for essential disability support and accessibility needs.

💧 What you need to know:
• The ban applies to all non-essential water use via hosepipes
• Blue Badge holders are NOT affected
• This includes watering gardens, washing cars, and filling pools
• Essential uses like cleaning mobility aids and accessibility equipment remain permitted

If you're unsure whether your situation qualifies for an exemption, check with your local water company for guidance.

Let's work together to protect London's water resources while ensuring disabled people can access the support they need. 💙
