Not what it seems: eyelid masquerades and diagnostic pitfalls

Your child has a squint. Does it need to be checked?

A squint means one eye doesn't line up with the other. It can turn in, out, up, or down, and it may be constant or come and go.

Not every squint needs surgery. Treatment starts with an assessment, and often glasses or prisms are enough. Surgery is only considered if it's needed.

Left unchecked, a squint can lead to amblyopia (lazy eye), which is why an early assessment matters. Squints in children can occasionally point to something else going on with the eye too, so a proper assessment is worth it rather than waiting to see.

An assessment starts with an orthoptist checking how the eyes move and work together, then a consultant confirms the diagnosis and discusses options with you.

If your child develops a sudden squint, especially with double vision, headache, or any change in their general health, that needs an urgent assessment. Contact us for an urgent appointment or go to your nearest A&E department.

We see children from birth, and urgent patients within 36 hours, often the same day.

Cataracts don't arrive overnight. They arrive quietly, in the things you slowly stop doing.

Cataract surgery removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a clear artificial one. Most patients notice a real improvement within days, it's a day case procedure with no overnight stay, and it's one of the safest, most commonly performed surgeries there is.

A beautiful, restorative result from Dr Lisa Jagan at Clinica London, and a great example of why eyelid surgery isn't always as simple as fixing the side that droops.

Some patients come in with one eyelid drooping more obviously than the other. But before operating on just that side, Dr Jagan checks for something called Hering's Law.

When one eyelid is lifted and corrected, the other "normal" eyelid can actually drop lower than where it started. This is why, in some cases, bilateral eyelid surgery is recommended from the start. It gives a more balanced, symmetrical result.

For this patient, Dr Jagan also used a scarless approach to ptosis surgery. That means no incision was made on the visible eyelid skin, which is especially valuable for patients with pigmented skin types, where scarring can be more visible or slower to fade.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Sophia Watts, Consultant Dermatologist, to our specialist team.

Dr Watts provides expert dermatological care for adults across a wide range of skin, hair and scalp conditions, with particular expertise in:

• Acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea
• Inflammatory and autoimmune skin conditions
• Hair loss and scalp disorders
• Mole and skin lesion assessment
• Skin cancer diagnosis and treatment
• Dermatological surgery

Dr Watts has a particular interest in hair disorders and hair loss, with more than seven years' experience working in a specialist hair clinic.

She trained in London, completed her specialist dermatology training at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and is currently a Consultant Dermatologist at University College London Hospitals (UCLH).

Alongside her clinical expertise, Dr Watts is known for her warm and approachable manner. She takes the time to understand what matters to each patient and works with them to develop an individualised and realistic treatment plan.

You don't always need to be on Harley Street to see us.

For some patients, a virtual consultation can make accessing specialist ophthalmic care more convenient, particularly when travelling to London isn't practical.

Virtual appointments may be suitable for:

• Follow-up appointments
• Second opinions
• Discussing symptoms or treatment options
• Patients studying away from home
• Patients who are travelling or on holiday
