Integrated Neurological Services Living well with a neurological condition: Lifelong rehabilitation & therapy in Richmond and Hounslow

INS has been working for over 30 years in Hounslow and Richmond to support adults living with neurological conditions, and their carers, to access long-term, professional and peer support in the community, helping them to manage symptoms, increase independence and live well with their condition. Our team of professional therapists (physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therap

y), trained counsellors, therapy assistants, activity co-ordinators and volunteers) work in different locations, as well as online, to give our service users the skills, strategies and support to manage their condition and help them stay connected with their social and community networks. We can provide the affordable, ongoing neurological care and rehabilitation, which is not available on the NHS, to help people improve their condition or prevent it from deteriorating. Our multidisciplinary team provides holistic therapy, social and emotional support tailored to people’s individual rehabilitation needs and goals. Neurological conditions can be life-changing if they cause long-term disability and affect people’s ability to live independently. At INS, we assess the whole person before providing services and support to help with physical, cognitive and communication issues and improve people’s independence, confidence and social participation. We offer support for as long as needed, often over many years. Help and advice is also available for family carers, many of whom have health issues of their own.

We recently ran a block of music therapy sessions in collaboration with Otakar Kraus Music Trust, integrating creativity and fitness by combining Music Therapy with upper limb exercises. Through engaging musical activities, participants were supported to reach, stretch, grasp, and move their arms and hands in a fun and motivating way.

These sessions aimed to promote physical mobility, coordination, confidence, and self-expression whilst enjoying the therapeutic benefits of music.

We would like to say a huge thank you to the members of the Teddington Vocality Choir, who held a fundraising concert for INS in July, raising a wonderful sum of £341!

Sarah Vines, INS CEO, enjoyed attending the concert and meeting all the members who generously took part.

Vocality choirs in Surrey and Southwest London bring people together to sing a range of uplifting music in unaccompanied harmony. They learn songs by ear, and everyone is welcome regardless of experience. Vocality believes in fostering an encouraging and fun environment - when everyone feels enabled, important, and inspired, amazing things can happen! Team MND Over Matter ride again for INS!

Last year Team MND Over Matter, assembled by INS service user David, took on the gruelling 50km Kent Downs Ultra Challenge walk, raising over £18k for INS.

We are delighted that the team are back with the goal of raising more vital funds for INS, and this time they're tackling the Thames Path Ultra Challenge on Saturday 12 September, a 50km walk from Putney to Runnymede. They will be joined by members of the INS team, including our CEO Sarah Vines.

Sarah said, "I'm really excited to be taking part in the Thames Path challenge on the 12th September. This year more of the INS staff team will be walking alongside the MND Over Matter Team who have already been so supportive to INS."

"Join the voluntary Garden maintenance group. A collection of some of the finest individuals that I have encountered."
INS Volunteer and garden correspondent Adil wrote an inspiring profile of the Ruils gardening group, who recently moved to the INS garden following the closure of their previous plot at Shacklegate.

Since arriving at the INS garden, the group (led by Mike and Gary) have brought the space to life with nature and community spirit. You can read Adil's profile of the group and more in our summer newsletter: https://www.ins.org.uk/news/the-ins-summer-newsletter-is-here-1
