Is training for strength and power only about working on muscle groups - or is there more to the story? Given we know we involve our whole system to rebalance and support limbs in action of any kind, it makes sense to think of finding strength and power in that more integrated, functional way too. Many do.
But there is still more to the story. We weren't born all wired up and ready to go. We have learnt and distilled our own personal patterns of moving over a lifetime of experience. And while some of those life-long habits of moving may be the very thing that makes us ‘good’ at dynamic activities, not all will be optimal. That may not matter when we are going about daily life, but what happens when we start to load our system by training or exercising more? At what point do we train further into those patterns that are not working well? Will that make us more skilful, more powerful or build in more limitation, strain - or even injury?
And how to address something so foundational and so individual? Correcting consciously muscle by muscle doesn’t always cut it when we are thinking about our deeper, underlying, highly-nuanced patterns that involve so many parts. Can we become more aware of how we act and begin to re-learn and improve those foundations so that any action becomes better supported, easier, better integrated - more skilful - as a result? How?
This is the kind of thing The Feldenkrais Method can enable. It will involve slowing down to feel and discover. It will involve going back to the floor to try out, explore, and improve skills from the ground up.
And it will help us start to address how force is transmitted from the ground through the skeleton to strike, pull, push, leap or kick with more clarity and simplicity so that you can train into better, more efficient patterns.
