A great afternoon presenting at the CMCJ Evidence to Impact Seminar ASSH in Boston 🇺🇸

My talk explored how we choose surgery for thumb CMC arthritis and how we translate comparative evidence into the right treatment for the individual patient.

The same diagnosis does not mean the same patient. Pain may be the presenting problem, but stability, anatomy, function and what the patient needs from their thumb all impact our decision making.

My proposed approach:

Pain → Stability → Structure → Demand

We should aim to define the outcome, before choosing the operation.

A brilliant format for the session combining new research with current concepts and real clinical application. I particularly enjoyed the discussion and challenge from colleagues across the US and internationally.

The direction of travel doesn’t matter. What matters is that knowledge travels.

Oslo 🇳🇴 A huge thank you to the Scandinavian SSH for the exceptionally warm welcome at their Annual Meeting, my first official engagement as FESSH President.

75 years ago, Scandinavia became the birthplace of European hand surgery collaboration. Erik Moberg had travelled to America to learn from Bunnell, on his return brought surgeons from across the Nordic countries together through the Nordic Hand Club (1951) - the first hand surgery society of its kind in Europe. Years later, it was the American surgeons (ASSH who travelled back to learn from him.

That spirit continues today. From Ann Nachemson of Sweden, FESSHEurope first female President, to Scandinavian leadership in HAND registries and outcomes, there is much for the rest of Europe to learn from and admire.

Thank you to our SSSH colleagues for the friendship, openness and new connections. I look forward to strengthening these relationships and to even greater Scandinavian contribution and leadership across European hand surgery.

And still time for Munch’s The Scream — a fitting end to a brilliant visit. 😱🇳🇴

A privilege to host the Annual BSSH Manchester Cadaveric Masterclass in Hand and Wrist Arthroplasty.

We were joined by an outstanding faculty from across the UK and Europe, all recognised experts in their fields, to deliver a day of advanced cadaveric training in hand and wrist reconstruction, arthroplasty and salvage surgery.

From the outset, the course has been built around four principles: (I) providing a truly orthoplastic learning environment, (ii) delivering value for BSSH members, (iii) financially supporting the educational work of the Society, and (iv) ultimately improving patient care.

My sincere thanks to the faculty, delegates, the Manchester Surgical Skills and Simulation Centre Manchester Surgical Skills & Simulation Centre, our industry partners, and BSSH for helping make another successful course possible.

The BSSH has been a major part of my professional life for many years through my own training, education, mentorship and so many friendships. So this acknowledgment means a great deal to me.
