🧠 Omega-3 Explained: Why It Matters

There’s a lot of conversation around omega-3 at the moment.

But why is it actually important?

Omega-3 fats are essential fats, meaning our bodies can’t produce enough on their own. We need to obtain them from our diet or supplements.

The two most important omega-3s, EPA and DHA, become part of the membrane surrounding every cell in your body. This means they play a role in how your cells communicate and function.

Research has shown that adequate omega-3 intake supports:
🧠 Brain health and cognitive function
❤️ Normal heart function
🦴 Healthy joints and the body’s normal inflammatory response
👁️ Eye health
🧬 Healthy cell function throughout the body

As a physiotherapist, I know that recovery isn’t just about treating symptoms. Long-term health is influenced by many factors, including movement, sleep, stress and nutrition.

Omega-3 isn’t a magic solution, but it may be another important piece of the puzzle.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing evidence-based information exploring the role of omega-3 in areas such as joint health, brain health, cardiovascular health, inflammation, recovery and perimenopause.

Because understanding why something matters is just as important as knowing what to do.

Last week I hinted I was working on something new for my human clients.
I’ve taken my time because I wanted it to fit with how I already work.

Not another health trend. Not testing for the sake of testing. Not more numbers without context.

Because if you’re living with chronic pain, navigating perimenopause, or feeling like your body has changed — information needs to be useful, not overwhelming.

Healing is individual.

Two people can have the same diagnosis but completely different stories, lifestyles, stress levels, sleep patterns and recovery capacity.
So healthcare should be individual too.

This month, I’m introducing something new to clinic.
Another way to understand one more piece of the puzzle.

Not a magic answer. Not a replacement for treatment.
Just another tool to help us look at the bigger picture.

I've been a little quiet on here lately...

The last few weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind in the run-up to the Highland Show. Lots of horses, rider assessments, treatments and plenty of miles on the road!
It was fantastic to see so many of my clients doing so well at the Highland, with lots of first placings across the week. I'm incredibly proud to play a small part in their journey and success.
I managed to make it along for one day myself with my trusty sidekick, who was far more interested in the tractors and quad bikes than the horses!
I also escaped for a weekend to the wilds of West Cork, and somewhere amongst the madness of June, my own lovely Felicity qualified for Scone.

Behind the scenes, I've also been working away on something new for my human clients. It's something I've been researching and developing for a while now, and I'm really excited to share more in July.
Let's just say it involves taking a closer look at what's happening inside the body and using that information to help people make more informed decisions about their health and wellbeing...
More details coming soon 👀
I hope you're all enjoying the sunshine and making the most of the longer days ☀️

Not all carrot stretches do the same thing.

New research has shown that different rehabilitation exercises activate different muscles.

One of the most interesting findings was that carrot stretches towards the hip produced strong activation through the abdominal and back muscles, while pelvic rounding was particularly useful for activating the lumbar back muscles.

Why does this matter?

Because rehab exercises shouldn’t be random.

The right exercise needs to match the goal.

Whether we’re improving core strength, supporting spinal mobility, or helping a horse recover from injury, exercise selection matters.

Physiotherapy isn’t just about giving exercises—it’s about choosing the right exercise, at the right time, for the right horse.

Small, targeted movements can make a big difference.
