There is a quiet art to the Japanese Head Spa.

Warm water moving slowly over the scalp. A deep scalp cleanse, a tension-melting massage, and the calming rhythm of warm water — finished with a hair wash and blow dry. Most guests lose track of time entirely — which is rather the point.

A massage is only ever as good as the hands giving it. So this past week, we closed the gap between good and exceptional.

We brought in Academy 64 and their lead tutors for a full week of intensive training with the team in Chatchaya Spa. Working alongside instructors like Boycie T Banks (VTCT Level 3, 360 hours of traditional Thai training in Thailand, international competition judge) and gold-medal-winning Thai Massage Champion Nana Nelson, our therapists trained across therapeutic massage, deep tissue, and Thai bodywork.

Every therapist came away with their Therapeutic Massage qualification. This is part of a wider plan to take the team through to their full VTCT qualifications.

What that means for you: when you book at Chatchaya, you’re booking hands that have been trained in our skilled, qualified, properly taught therapeutic work. 💆‍♀️

Competitive athletes worked this out long ago: recovery gets scheduled, just like training does. Not reached for once they’re already sore: booked in advance, at regular intervals, as part of the plan.

For active people, two routes:

💪 Deep tissue or sports massage — works into tight, overloaded muscles and releases the knots that build up through training.
🧘 Thai yoga massage — assisted stretching and rhythmic pressure, performed clothed, to open up the range of movement and mobility.

Booked every 3 to 4 weeks, either one sits in the gaps between your training rather than competing with it.

If you work at a desk, here's where the tension actually collects:

It's rarely where you feel it. Sitting shortens the hip flexors and the chest, which quietly pulls the shoulders forward and overloads the upper back and neck to compensate. So the ache you feel between your shoulder blades is often your body bracing against tight hips you've never thought about.

A good deep-tissue or Thai massage works the whole chain, releasing the hips and chest, rather than just chasing the spot that hurts. That's why the relief tends to last longer than rubbing the sore bit yourself.

A 1-hour session every few weeks keeps the whole pattern from settling in.
