First time back to the gym today! Felt a bit nervous as I’m still partial weight bearing on crutches so getting about, and getting equipment sorted, is more challenging than usual!
But I made it work (with a little help from hubby 🥰), and most importantly I did it safely!
So had a great session mainly working on upper body and core to compliment my post op knee rehab which I do at home. This is still very limited due to the restrictions in place (which are needed to protect my ligament grafts and meniscal repair) for another couple of weeks...
But great for both body and mind to get out and start doing a bit more!

After months of training Sam finally made it to the top of Mont Ventoux! All the work in the gym to increase the strength in her quads, hamstrings, glutes and calfs alongside increasing cardiovascular fitness really paid off. She was able to enjoy the ride without too much struggling at the top and without injury. What an incredible experience and if you are training for or inspired to train for a challenge we encourage you to go for it! If you have any problems with pain or injury along the way we are here to help!

Week 3 post op: lots of small gains, but one very important one!

This week I reached a milestone that used to take less than a second but has taken three weeks of hard work, determination, and quite a lot of discomfort to achieve: 90 degrees of knee bend.

It's funny how major surgery changes your perspective. As physios, we often focus on long-term goals and outcomes, but when you're the patient, you quickly learn to appreciate the small wins along the way.

Dressings off ✔️
Stitches out ✔️
90° bend achieved ✔️
Quad muscle slowly waking up ✔️

The knee is still swollen, stiff and painful at times, but it's moving in the right direction.

One of the most valuable reminders I've had this week came from my physio appointment: I haven't had one operation to recover from, I've had three major knee surgeries at the same time. Sometimes recovery isn't about pushing harder; it's about recognising how far you've already come.

One more week of partial weight bearing restrictions and then I can start loading the leg again. That feels like a huge milestone on the horizon.

For anyone going through injury, surgery or rehabilitation right now: don't underestimate the importance of small gains. They might seem insignificant to others, but they're often the building blocks of the bigger victories to come.

Lovely to hear these words of support for physiotherapy spoken in parliament, echoing the importance of easy access to rehab. 🥰

It truly is a privilege to be involved in helping people keep active and doing the things they love! ❤️

All the training is done and we’re excited at the prospect of testing our legs next week and hopefully some great views!

Sam had a fantastic long weekend in the New Forest pedalling up lots of long climbs over each day. She was testing out the newly purchased tandem and noticed that being in a different but better riding position made her muscles ache in new ways! More practice on the new bike is needed to get the muscles used to the new riding position. Fortunately she was able to help with everyone’s aches and pains and was able to do the right exercises for hers!
