Are you feeling disconnected from others?

It's something we don't talk about enough, but social isolation can be as harmful to our health as smoking 15 ci******es a day.

Staying independent isn’t limited to physical health, it’s about that human connection too.

Tag someone who helps you stay connected. 🫂

150 minutes of physical activity a week can reduce your risk of decline.

That’s just over 20 minutes a day.

Which lead to better strength, improved balance, and greater independence. 👍

In fact, evidence shows people who do 3+ hours of meaningful movement each week are almost half as likely to fall.

It doesn't have to be intense, it just has to be consistent.

It's National Carers Week 2026.

This year's theme, "Building Carer Friendly Communities," reminds us of the vital role unpaid carers play in supporting family members, friends, and neighbours every single day.

Through our work across health and social care, we see first-hand the difference carers make. We also see the challenges many face as they balance caring responsibilities alongside work, family life, and their own wellbeing.

This week is an opportunity to recognise and support those who give so much to others.

To every unpaid carer, thank you.

Staying independent isn’t one big action.

It’s built into your day with little changes here and there...

🪑 Standing up from a chair
🚶‍♀️ Walking regularly
🙆‍♂️ Reaching, bending, balancing

These are called functional –
the same movements you use every day.

Practising them helps you keep doing the things you love, for longer.

Save this as a reminder that small actions matter.

After back surgery, Geoff could have avoided the hill near his home.

Instead, he trained for it.

At first, it took 5 stops to reach the top.
Now, just 3.

Step by step, Geoff rebuilt his strength, stamina, and confidence.

That’s what staying independent looks like.

What’s one small goal you’re working towards? 💬

The remaining 75% is about the choices you make in your lifestyle, habits, and daily activities.

That means you have more control than you think.

Small actions today can shape your future independence.

Ageing doesn't happen all at once.

It often starts with the smaller things. Taking a little longer to get up, avoiding the stairs, losing confidence.

Many people don't notice the early signs of decline – until it starts to affect independence.

But you can take action earlier.

Supporting independence doesn't mean taking over, it can simply mean spotting the signs and offering help in the right way.

Have you ever noticed these small changes in someone you care about? 💬 👇

Families are often the first people to notice the small changes.

A little less confidence on the stairs, taking longer to get up from a chair, quietly withdrawing from activities once enjoyed.

Ageing rarely happens all at once – and for many families, everyday moments can matter the most.

This International Day of Families, it’s a reminder to cherish those moments. The conversations over a cup of tea, the walks together, the encouragement, the support, and the independence that helps people live the life they love.

Because supporting someone doesn’t always mean doing more for them. Sometimes, it means helping them to keep doing things for themselves. 💛
