In a world full of health claims, how do you know what to trust?

Professor John Hurst explains why learning to spot the difference between reliable and unreliable evidence is a skill that everyone needs.

He encourages people to ask questions about what they read, check where information comes from and stay curious without becoming cynical.

That is why ELF and European Respiratory Society are urging European leaders to keep science open and trustworthy, and ensure public information is based on credible evidence.

🤝 Patients and caregivers are shaping personalised cancer care through SPARC

The first SPARC Patient and Caregiver Advisory Group (PCAG) meeting brought together people from across Europe to share their experiences of cancer care and learn how they can contribute to the project’s work.

Their insights will help ensure patient information, engagement activities and future resources reflect real patient needs.

SPARC is a three-year European-funded project working to improve the implementation of personalised cancer care across Europe.

💬 Patient voices shaping discussions on heart health and clean air

ELF Council members Helen Parks and Phil Taverner took part in discussions on to***co use and air quality in May, sharing their lived experience and knowledge on prevention and public health.

By sharing real-life experiences, patient representatives can help shape policies and healthcare approaches that support better health outcomes for people living with lung conditions.

🏘️ Does where you live influence your lung health?

New research has explored whether an area’s social and economic conditions may be linked to the lung health of adults living in those areas.

Researchers found differences in lung health between people living in areas with more or fewer resources, even when taking factors such as age and smoking into account.

🫁 Healthy Lungs for Life joined partners in Barcelona to support public activities promoting lung health and healthy lifestyles.

Around 50 people took part in free lung function tests and learned more about their lung health and the importance of prevention and early detection.

Thank you to ISGLOBAL - Barcelona Institute for Global Health, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and Fundación Lovexair for supporting these activities as part of the 2026 Healthy Lungs for Life programme ahead of the ERS Congress later this year!

🤝 Patient representatives from the OPTIMA Public/Patient Advisory Board (PPAB) attended the annual meeting in Brussels, contributing important patient perspectives to discussions on the role of AI in cancer care.

Sessions during the meeting highlighted key patient priorities including trust, transparency, shared decision-making and the continued importance of human oversight in cancer care.

The role of the PPAB is important in the project. As AI becomes more widely used in healthcare, active patient involvement and co-creation will remain essential to ensuring these technologies are effectively.

On , we are reminded that to***co smoke does not only affect smokers, but also those around them.

Children exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to develop breathing problems. Even before birth, exposure during pregnancy could affect how a child’s lungs develop.

A smoke-free environment is one of the best ways to protect children’s health.

The EU-funded project supports smoke-free environments for children and helps raise awareness in schools and communities.
