Every room in their apartment reminds Dermot O’Neill of his late wife. The Mrs Brown’s Boys star (74) shared the home with Patricia (60) — known to family and friends as Chickie — until a few days ago when she sadly passed away.

“There are photographs all over the place and I just stare at them,” he said. “I feel so lonely. I feel the pain all over my body. I’m simply vegetating on the couch. I have the telly on and I don’t know what’s on it because I’m hurting inside. Really hurting.”

A large canvas hangs on the wall, capturing their wedding day 14 years ago. “That was the happiest day of my life because I got to marry her,” he said. “It was the best moment of my life.”

O’Neill has played grandad Harold Brown in the BBC sitcom since 2011.

One day last week, his daughter Nicola rang him shortly after 3am. He had been asleep after spending much of the day travelling back and forth to St Francis Hospice in Raheny, Dublin, where his wife was receiving end-of-life care after being diagnosed with cancer.

“Nicola said to me, ‘Mum has passed on’. I was devastated. It was surreal. I knew she was dying, but at the same time I was holding on to hope for a miracle,” he said. “I went straight to her. When I looked at her, she looked so pretty.

“I’d want her to know how much I love her and to thank her for all the years of happiness.”

A year on from leaving rehabilitation and 18 months after a high-profile court case, DJ Nikki Hayes says motherhood is now the force driving her recovery from addiction and homelessness

The former Irish radio star, originally from Bray, has endured a life marked by success and struggle, including a near-deadly addiction to alcohol

Her rock bottom came during a period of homelessness in Dublin city centre. “I just remember lying there feeling really dirty, really smelly, like nothing, like a nobody"

Exams can bring pressure, stress, self-doubt, and anxiety for many teenagers. While a certain amount of stress can be normal, feeling overwhelmed doesn’t have to be faced alone.
At Somers Psychotherapy, we understand the challenges young people can experience during exam time and offer a safe, supportive space to talk, process emotions, and develop healthy coping strategies.

If your teen is struggling with stress, anxiety, confidence, or the pressures of school life, support is available.

“June is a reminder that growth doesn’t have to be rushed. Take the time you need.”
As we step into a new month, June offers an opportunity to check in with ourselves and notice what we need.
Mental health isn’t just about getting through difficult times—it’s also about creating space for rest, connection, growth, and self-care. Longer days and brighter evenings can encourage us to slow down, spend time outdoors, reconnect with loved ones, or simply take a moment to breathe.
Remember, looking after your mental wellbeing is not a luxury; it’s an important part of living a balanced and healthy life.
Whether you’re facing challenges, navigating change, or simply seeking support, reaching out is a sign of strength.
Wishing our community a peaceful, positive, and healthy June.
