So true, it can take effort to train yourself to look for the good/ the bright side. Life can be tough no matter what but it will be infinitely better in the long run if you realise that this is a life skill.

‘This is me’ from The fantastic movie ‘The Greatest Showman’, was a song we used in our 2019 summer camps, we got the kids singing it and hopefully believing in themselves more. The lyrics are very powerful.
Yesterday, I had someone I know say to me, that I didn’t look well after losing weight (which has been a life long struggle). She said it 4-5 different ways every time I replied saying ‘No, I’m very happy’, ‘I’ve been trying to lose weight my whole life’, she then went on to tell me how she is struggling with her own weight loss. Ah! This proved to me what I tell kids all the time; - it’s not about you! It’s their own stuff coming out. It also reminded me of a lady I worked with in the States years ago, shocking me with ‘Caoimhe you’re getting fat’ when she was struggling with obesity. There will always be people commenting (unfortunately), no matter what age we are. We can always choose kindness and teach our kids and teens that when someone changes / looks different you can simply say ‘you look great’ and if they don’t, just say nothing.

Immediately afterwards, my daughter reminded me about what I teach kids, and to take my own advice; ‘water off a ducks back’ & just let it go. So even though she poked a nerve, I was glad it happened. My kids actually do occasionally listen! The power is in how we respond and what we tell ourselves.

I’ve had a lot of teens coming to me recently suffering with overthinking, intrusive thoughts and repetitive loops. This is a very short clip but a reminder to try think new thoughts that move you towards a goal. Summer time is a great time to set some goals when kids & teens have holidays from school. It doesn’t have to be a big goal just something that can keep your child or teen challenged & that they’re interested in: for example
1. Reading more
2. Getting out and meeting up with friends / family more.
3. Art or crafts - something creative
4. Trying a new sport
5. More sea swimming / trips to the beach or park
6. Making a new friend
7. Staying in better contact with certain people from school
8. Learning something new like a new skill or language.
9. Find ways to earn money or do odd jobs for free for an elderly neighbour like walking dogs, cutting grass, cleaning windows etc.
Anything that encourages interaction, being outside and creativity is a win win!

Happy Mothers Day to all the amazing mothers out there. Juggling their families, work, & a million other things. We often put our own happiness last on the list. I remember 14 years ago when I was becoming a life coach; I asked the course director ‘how do I make sure my kids don’t grow up with all the doubts & negative self talk that I had?’ He answered ‘it’s simple, don’t overthink it, just live a happy life - you are their role model, show them what happiness is’. ❤️
