Akaroa Lavender

Akaroa Lavender Akaroa Lavender is an organic lavender farm with short-term rental accommodations above Akaroa harbour. Akaroa Organics produces two types of lavender.

We also do seasonal guided walks focusing on lavender (summer) and conservation (winter). Lavender is an ancient oil that continues to have many uses. The name means to wash and originates from the Latin word ‘lavare’. It’s ancient uses include bathing, scenting clothes, healing and antiseptic qualities, and as an insect repellant. These days lavender is widely used as: a sedative, an anti depressant, an antibiotic, an antiseptic, muscle relaxant and in the treatment of eczema. The increasingly popular art of aromatherapy is helping this natural product make a comeback. Lavender oil is safe to use externally but should be used with caution during pregnancy. Our largest amount of oil originates from plants known as Grosso. Grosso Lavandin is a naturally occurring hybrid of Lavandin angustifolia and Lavindin latifolia. A smaller amount of oil is made from Lavandula Angustifolia known as Pacific Blue. This is a New Zealand origin lavender.

Your journey to Akaroa is part of the adventure. During winter, please allow a little extra travel time and drive to the conditions.

Before you leave:
Check the latest weather forecast and road conditions before travelling.
Leave a little later on frosty mornings where possible, allowing time for roads to warm after sunrise.
Ensure your vehicle has good tyre tread, working lights and plenty of fuel.

On the road:
Reduce your speed on frosty or icy sections, particularly on bridges, shaded corners and hill roads where black ice can form.
Increase your following distance and avoid sudden braking or sharp steering.
Turn on your headlights in low light, fog or snowfall to improve visibility.
If conditions deteriorate, be prepared to delay your journey until it is safe to continue.
Watch for freshly gritted roads. Loose grit can affect traction and may be thrown up by other vehicles.

Pack for the season:
Bring warm clothing, sturdy footwear and a waterproof jacket.
Keep a phone charger, torch, drinking water and snacks in your vehicle, especially if travelling through rural areas.

Once you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with peaceful streets, cosy cafés, roaring fires, breathtaking coastal views and the unique charm that makes Akaroa and the Bays such a special winter destination. Sometimes, the best winter memories begin with simply slowing down and enjoying the journey.

☔ One Perfect Winter Day in Akaroa
This winter has certainly been keeping us on our toes - one day sunshine, the next rain, and sometimes even a dusting of snow! But don't let a cooler forecast put you off. Some of Akaroa's best experiences happen when you slow down, stay cosy, and embrace the season.

🧀 Start with a scenic drive to Barry's Bay Cheese. Reward yourself for making the trip over the hill with award-winning artisan cheeses, local treats, and a peek through the viewing window to watch the cheesemakers at work.

🛍️ Next, explore Akaroa's boutique shopping scene. Wander through galleries and specialty stores filled with local art, handcrafted gifts, fashion, homewares, books, and gourmet delights - you never know what hidden treasure you'll find.

🏛️ Step back in time at the Akaroa Museum. Discover the stories of Māori settlement, French heritage, early pioneers, and the maritime history that makes Akaroa one of New Zealand's most unique towns.

🍷 Take your pick of Akaroa's cafés and restaurants for a long, relaxed lunch. Savour fresh local produce, enjoy a glass of regional w**e, and watch the ever-changing harbour views from the warmth indoors.

⛪ Visit one of Akaroa's beautiful historic churches. Their peaceful atmosphere and striking architecture offer another glimpse into the town's rich past.

🚤 Don't write off the outdoor adventures just because it's raining. Many of Akaroa's boat tours and wildlife experiences operate in wet weather, with warm jackets, shelter, and even hot chocolate provided. Before changing your plans, check with your tour operator - you might be surprised what you can still enjoy.

For those who love photography every corner has a new view - moody harbour, contrasting hills and epic clouds - take your pic!

☕ Round off your day with coffee and something sweet at one of Akaroa's cosy cafés.
