This week served as a wonderful reminder that our responsibilities go beyond just providing materials. One of our clients took a moment to share their appreciation for Rebekah, our Lower North Island Sales Consultant.

They spoke about her ability to understand their clients’ aesthetic, deliver a complete package that worked within budget and construction time frames, and become a trusted part of the design process.

The best projects are shaped by conversations, collaboration, and taking the time to understand what matters to the people behind the project. Helping navigate the many decisions that come with creating a home or commercial space.

Materials matter, but people matter just as much. It’s a lovely reminder that while we work with tiles, stone and cork every day, our business has always been built on relationships.

Travertine has been used in architecture for centuries, and it's easy to understand why. Its variation is subtle, its texture feels honest, and it becomes more comfortable within a space over time.

Unlike materials that rely on bold patterns or strong colours, travertine creates interest through natural movement and character. No two pieces are exactly the same, yet together they form a surface that feels calm, balanced and remarkably easy to live with.

Some materials become dated, others become part of the story of a home.

"Should I use natural stone or porcelain?"

It depends on your project.

Natural stone offers unique variation and develops character over time, while porcelain provides exceptional consistency, durability, and low maintenance.

Neither is inherently better. The right choice depends on the environment, how the space will be used, the aesthetic you're trying to achieve, and how the material will perform over time.

The good news is you don't always have to choose one or the other. Some of the most successful projects combine both, using natural stone where its character can really shine and porcelain where performance and practicality are key. It's not about choosing the better material. It's about choosing the right material for the right application.

One of the things we love seeing in residential projects is when the transition between indoors and out feels effortless.

In this Auckland home, a travertine-inspired material palette has been carried throughout the living spaces and outdoor areas, creating a natural sense of flow. Tumbled natural stone adds warmth and texture inside, while large-format travertine-look porcelain continues the story outdoors. The subtle mosaic detailing brings another layer of interest, proving that even small material choices can have a big impact on the overall feel of a project.
