Calm is out, Energy is in. But—Can you mobilize without adrenaline? Yes, you can!

Healing, growing, and moving toward the things that light you up might likely and initially involve some nerves, some adrenaline. But, saturating yourself in adrenaline to get things done is not sustainable.

There’s another way to mobilize, to inhabit your body and life. A relational somatic experience can be a sustainable, nourishing and accessible practice to feed your body and life force a more satisfying and present practice of living, moving and relating.

Chi for Two® originator Dee Wagner and co-developer Caroline Gebhardt wrote a journal article (published June 2025), and it is now available to read in its entirety on the Chi for Two website.

Infant reflexes have long been studied by occupational therapists. Dance/movement therapists shine light on the therapeutic dance, helping us see how client/therapist interactions “re-parent” nervous system functioning. 🧠💛

We invite all helping professionals who appreciate polyvagal theory, who consider themselves trauma-informed, whose work is attachment-based, to read this article and join us for discussions of this important information about the rhythm of the firing and refractory period of the myelinated and unmyelinated vagus and its effect on digestion, breathing and the striatum—the part of the brain that allows movement to be a choice.

The article is:

Chi for Two® developmental relational practices: a lens for examining how somatic therapy might resolve infant reflexes.

The more you get to know tension, and become curious about it, instead of hastily swiping it away by fixing something or forcing something, the more it becomes a regular and less threatening fixture, something that can be amusing rather than frightening.

What might you be giving birth to this time?

How might you stay a little longer and try a new move, a new pause, a new response, the way you’d ideally hold a baby or a child when they’re working through a strain that you know they will eventually release?

How might you stretch with breath, befriend the tension without letting it consume you?

That’s where the “aha” happens, the shift that happens beyond words.

Sometimes, it’s nice to have support along the way.

With big developmental stages, you can also expect BIG feelings, behaviors, impulses, confusion, asks, demands, feelings and BIG needs for connection with you, the parent(s).

Parents, are you ready to handle what your kids are trying to tell you?

Developmentally appropriate boundaries and consequences and limits are all really important (*they are nuanced for each unique child and family).

However, before those things happen, your kids are begging for connection.

"See me. Hear me. Notice me."

"Put down your phone and look at me."

"Heads up, be solid for my Push!"

M-Bodied Therapy & Coaching offers neuroaffirming, attachment-based psychoeducation. *But before the cognitive understanding and intellectualizing and instructions have time to become organized, your parent-body needs to know more.

New movement patterns aren't just for babies, they are for all bodies to experience to:

a) redo what you didn't get, and
b) be prepared to embody the pause that creates space for connection, catching and channeling.

This is an embodied process for parents & kids.

When 70% of our relational dynamics are mismatch, the elders in the system get to be more informed beyond the calming techniques and more so than ever about both the developmental rhythms that help with agency and separation, as well as what might also be dysregulation.

All responses need to be relational, from elder to child, and handled with TLC, steadiness & strength.

Body to body. Heart to heart. Life force to life force. 🌟

M-Bodied guides parents & caregivers how to:

• better recognize nervous system, developmental, & trauma responses
• appreciate attachment as an ongoing relational practice
• feel equipped to offer body-based co-regulation practices to children that benefit the whole family

Both M-Bodied Therapy & Coaching are grounded in the principles and practices of Chi for Two®, which groups and sequences early relational embodiment practices as symbolic redos for nervous system functioning & healthy relationships.

One of the main things that tip people toward garden-variety depression is a “low tolerance for sadness.” It is the inability to bear dark emotions that causes many of our most significant problems, in other words, and not the emotions themselves. When we cannot tolerate the dark, we try all kinds of artificial lights, including but not limited to drugs, alcohol, shopping, shallow s*x, and hours in front of the television set or computer.

When I was in college, I trained to teach at The FIRM in Columbia, SC, the local weight training studio created by two adult sisters, pioneers in women's health.

*Jane Fonda reigned at that same time, but if you or your mother were into heel-ball-toe and knee-repeaters on the The Step, you are also likely familiar with The FIRM videos. Jane Fonda 🤗

I still have my FIRM training documents because they still ring true and are symbolic of other somatic movement practices by encouraging one to:

1) Start S-L-O-W-L-Y. Too much, too fast, too soon can cause injury and burnout.

2) Variety is key: Strength, endurance, flexibility and creative expression keep your body-mind-spirit well nourished.

2) Move from your center, your core. Technique and form can offer the exterior cues and safety, but sharpening your relationship with your core, your center, your relationship to your body and your self, inevitably helps your drive and expression to thrive from the center-outward.

The FIRM method was one of the first longterm sustainable movement methods I am still committed to practicing because the core principles are the basic, chop-wood-carry-water daily beats that offer sustenance, focus, steadiness and energy.

Our culture loves to promote movement, action and principles that require adrenaline for production.

But your body knows better. Your body screams with chronic pain, whispers with mysterious symptoms. It reacts by coping with chronic behaviors or impulsive decisions that produce shame or guilt or concern. It collapses after performing with adrenaline. It eventually whimpers when dog-eat-dog competition wears you out.

When we return to becoming curious about the wisdom of our body -- how our body craves repetitive relational experiences that promote the physiological functioning where support, pleasure, exploratory movement and action, and rest are all welcome and practiced -- we begin a new relationship with our core awareness, our sense of self, and healthier relationships with others.

So, how do you start?
