One of the highlights of our Stroke Awareness Luncheon was hearing from Miss Carliss as she shared her recovery journey and the lessons she's learned along the way. Her story was filled with perseverance, courage, and a determination that inspired everyone in the room.

Recovery is rarely a straight path, but Miss Carliss reminded us that every step forward matters. Through dedication, hard work, and the support of her family, friends, and care team, she has continued to overcome obstacles and celebrate meaningful victories.

We are so grateful to Miss Carliss for opening her heart and sharing her experience. Her message of hope, resilience, and strength serves as an encouragement to stroke survivors and their loved ones everywhere. 💜💚

✨ Functional Friday Success Story ✨

Our patient participated in an arts and crafts activity, creating and writing personalized cards for loved ones. Occupational therapy utilized this salient task that the patient truly enjoys to target fine motor coordination, precision, dexterity, and interdigital manipulation skills. Engaging in meaningful tasks not only strengthens physical abilities but also promotes motivation and confidence.

We are equally excited to celebrate our patient’s remarkable progress in physical therapy. At the time of her initial PT evaluation, she was unable to complete transfers independently. Through dedication, perseverance, and consistent therapy, she has significantly improved her standing tolerance, strength, and functional mobility.

Her most exciting milestone yet? She recently ambulated 50 feet with an Eva walker- her first time walking since January of this year! 🎉 Every step reflects months of hard work, determination, and commitment to her recovery journey.

From crafting heartfelt cards to taking meaningful steps, this patient continues to demonstrate that functional goals are achieved one accomplishment at a time. We are incredibly proud of her progress and look forward to celebrating many more milestones ahead!

⭐ Patient Spotlight ⭐

From needing the assist of two people just to stand at her initial physical therapy evaluation, to now walking 150 ft with a platform rolling walker and only contact guard assist of one person, Tiffany Thomas’s progress has been incredible to witness! 👏

When she first started in therapy, Tiffany required assistance to maintain standing and could only ambulate 45 feet with help of two people. Fast forward to today- she can stand unsupported for 4 whole minutes and continues to push herself every single session. 💪

Her determination, positive attitude, and willingness to take on every challenge have made all the difference in her recovery. She recently received her upper extremity prosthetic and is excited to jump back into OT to continue gaining independence. We already know she’s going to crush it!

Give Tiffany a shout out when you see her in the gym. She’s hard to miss with the cool design of her prosthetic devices. It’s safe to say we’ve got a pretty dedicated Chiefs fan in the building! ❤️💛🏈

We are so proud of how far Tiffany has come in therapy, and we are excited to see what she achieves next! Congratulations, Tiffany! You are truly an inspiration to all of us. Keep up the great work!

May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month. This month is dedicated to raising awareness and educating the public about speech, language, hearing, cognitive, and swallowing disorders and recognizing the professionals who provide evaluation and treatment of those disorders.

In the adult neuro population, speech therapy plays a critical role in helping individuals regain communication, cognition, and swallowing abilities after conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, multiple sclerosis, and other neurological disorders. Speech-language pathologists help adults improve speech intelligibility, memory, problem-solving, attention, voice, and swallowing so they can maintain their independence, safety, and quality of life.

This month, we celebrate the resilience of our patients and the dedication of our speech-language pathologists, Shannon, Tatum, and Jacey, who empower their patients in their recovery every day.

Our 15th Annual Stroke Awareness Luncheon was truly unforgettable and filled with inspiration, encouragement, and hope. 💜 It brought us so much joy to see both past and present patients reconnecting, sharing their journeys, and celebrating victories big and small. Seeing so many smiling faces in one room was a beautiful reminder of how powerful resilience, support, and community can be. Hearing the stories of perseverance and recovery by Anissa Porter, Carliss Lands, Mona Martinez, and José Solorzano really touched everyone in attendance. From the challenges faced to the milestones achieved, every testimony was a reminder that healing is a journey that requires strength, courage, faith, and determination. Their stories continue to inspire not only our staff, but every individual and family navigating the impact of a stroke.

A heartfelt thank you to all of our amazing vendors and sponsors for their generosity and continued support in making this luncheon such a success every year. This year, we particularly want to thank- Hanger, Numotion, Orthotic and Prosthetic Specialists, Francois Bend Senior Living, STAT Home Health, Bon Jour Social and Leisure Center, Dedicated Sitters, Griswold Home Care, National Seating and Mobility, Duramed, About You In Home Care, Motus Nova, Rehab Medical, Williamsburg Senior Living Community, Action Rehab, Superior Van and Mobility, Myomo, and MedRhythms, Inc. Our partnerships with these companies help us continue to provide resources and support stroke survivors throughout our community.

Many thanks also to our guest speaker, Dana McKinney, MS, CCC-SLP, CBIST-AP. Dana’s knowledge and insight brought inspiration to our patients and their families. We want to thank Dana for taking the time to make such a meaningful impact and for providing motivation for our patients as they continue their recovery. We are grateful for Dana’s support and partnership.

Most of all, thank you to all of our patients for allowing Sage Outpatient to be part of your stroke recovery journey and for reminding others that there is always hope. We truly appreciate each of you for trusting us with your care. When we see our past and present patients at our stroke luncheon each year, it reminds us why awareness, education, compassion, and support matter so much.

Remember, recovery is not always measured by speed, but by courage and persistence. Every day that you continue to fight, heal, and move forward is a victory worth celebrating. Your story is still being written, and each new day brings another chance for progress, joy, and renewed strength. We hope that your difficult roads always lead to beautiful destinations! We hope to see you all again next year.
